Okay, I've signed up with 123-REG and filled in Nominet's online form. I
just have to post or fax the pdf file now.

One more question. I don't have a fax machine, but isn't there some way I
could scan and send the document to Nominet rather than posting it? In other
words, couldn't I use my computer as a fax machine?

You could do that. I don't know what the terms are for that offer but
if you want to use the domain for more than the first free year
please make sure you read them carefully to avoid any unexpected
problems / fees.

It seems that the free hosting can only be used with the transferred domain
name, so that's no good.

If you are still on dial-up or have an old modem available you may be
able to use the modem to fax (many of the modems would do fax too).
Effectively the driver acts like a printer and you print the scanned
file to the fax modem.

If not it might be easier to pop into your local library / shop that
will send a fax for you.

Assumed a .com this morning, got one of those bloody annoying lists folk
put in places people /thought/ they wanted to go... Turns out Vango the
outdoor gear folk are .co.uk

I suspect the moral is you just can't win.

The way to really win is to have several names registered, but all pointing
to the same site. :-) But that costs more money. :-(

Yes I do have an old modem, but I'm not familiar with the process. Thanks
for pointing out the option though.

Doesn't matter now as I've mailed it a couple of days ago, so now I'm just
waiting...

In many cases, I suspect so. Most newbies don't know about these things and
seem to think everything ends in com.

That's the other side of the coin. Even if you do know that a UK site should
end in co.uk, a lot of UK sites end in com.

Just a quickie to say that it's taken a little while, but it all seems to be
sorted out now. Thanks again for your help.

I've now got the the domain tagged with 123-REG and a short while ago I
changed the nameserves to my new host UKHost4u. It said that there could be
a delay of 24-48 hours for changes to take effect, but Nominet updated the
nameservers straight away and the site seems to be working fine with
practically no downtime.

I have read that it takes a while for caches to be updated so it may not
work for everyone immediately, but I presume pressing Control-f5 would fix
that?

If you or anyone else would like to take a quick look to check that it's
working okay, I'd appreciate it.
