OT: Defrag programs for Mac

your hard drives!!!

First off, Any's suggestion that you back up your hard drive should
be taken seriously, and that goes for Windows and other OS users too.

What makes you think you need to defragment your hard drive? Disk
fragmentation is very unusual under Mac OS X. If you are having a
problem with your Mac's hard drive, the best software out there for Mac
OS X by far is Alsoft's DiskWarrior, but make sure you are using the
latest version, even if you buy a new copy today. You can visit the web
site at http://www.alsoft.com for information on DiskWarrior. You can
buy Disk Warrior at any store that sells Mac software.

For any additional questions on Mac stuff, I suggest you subscribe to
the comp.sys.mac.apps newsgroup.

Norton sucks for Windows too. A computer nerd friend insisted that I needed Norton
System works to keep my system running properly. My system was constantly
crashing. I got rid of everything but the anti virus software and things ran much
better. Then I got hit with a whack of viruses and had major troubles. Despite
frequent updates, Norton did not catch them. I spent good money on a utility
program to make my system run better, and all it did was screw things up.

Surprised that a computer nerd would recommend anything with the name
"Norton" on it. Usually people end up with it because of all of the
advertising and shelf space that it occupies. Peter Norton made good
products but it quickly went downhill after he sold out to Symantec.

Can't help you with the "now" part. Best solution is more disk space.
Second best solution (because it's more work) is to delete unneeded
files to free up disk space.

What Norton program are you using and how do you know it's really
fragmentation? From my 5 minutes of research - it looks like you need
to free up some RAM - so it's probably not a defrag issue (being a Mac
user). I'll email a friend who is a "Mac person" and can answer
questions like this. I'll get back to you after he responds.

Have you done all the usual stuff, checking for viruses, trojans and
malware? I'd be more inclined to think you've got a nasty trojan
lurking somewhere.

I pretty much only keep what I want. :-)
I could burn a bunch of stuff to disk, but this is a 60 gig HD and I'm
only using about 30 gigs of it.

You mean I can only use 1/2 of my hard drive???

From what I understand tho', deleting stuff does not really help. The
data is still there, just available to be over-written...... so it can
actually make fragmentation WORSE!!!

Possibly... but I've no idea how to search for something like that?
I do scan with Virex regularly and update virex also. AFAIK, there are
no viruses.

Norton is not supported under Mac OS X. Do not use Norton Utilities on
any computer that runs Mac OS X because you run a risk of trashing your
computer that way. Try Tech Tool Pro if you want a similar utility that
actually works.

Its for Mac OS X 10.2, if I am not mistaken and it did more harm than
good even on that OS. Get yourself DiskWarrior and Tech Tool Pro and you
won't regret it.

I always go in groveling and asking for patience towards an old woman.
I've only ever received cordial responses. And Disk Warrior was my
friend for OS 9.1. Their tech support guy is a sweetheart if you talk
nice to him. I expect to acquire DW for OSX when I get a few bucks
ahead. It's $80. (I just acquired an iBook.) And I've read more than
one person complain about Norton screwing things up, though my husband
uses its anti-virus software for Windows XP.
