I know there's a bit of DV helmet-cam users here, so I figured I'd ask:
My camera (Samsung scd67), after sitting for about three months, now only plays back gray screens w/ no audio. When cueing forward I can see the footage, but as soon as I return to regular speed the screen is just gray again.
This sounds like a case of dirty heads (or however a DV reads) to me, but somebody might have a better idea. If it is just heads, what's the best way to clean?

Get a head cleaning tape and give it a try. If it's not that, your CCD is shot.

I'm no expert (on this anyway), but it's described as a playback problem. The CCD is only involved in recording or monitoring so I doubt that's the culprit here.
Running a cleaning tape is a good suggestion. Beyond that if it were mine I'd Google for sites with relavent information and take it from there. Maybe a DV discussion board will have the experts who may be familiar with this.

Try cleaning of course, but did you store the tape in the camcorder while it was off? This wears out the video head. You may need a new one. They are not cheap, sorry. But if you do, it may be cheaper just to buy a new camcorder. Go digital if you can.

Absurd. The tape drive retracts the tape from the heads when the tape is not playing. Even if it didn't, it wouldn't be a problem unless the tape totally deteriorated in the machine - unlikely to happen in only 3 months.
Cleaning tapes are generally not good as they're very abrasive.
Usually the tape door comes off pretty easily, making the heads accessible. However, cleaning video heads is not something I recommend someone try unless they've been shown how to properly do it as the heads can be broken *very* easily.
