Anyone been able to reliably filter out both MV posts and any subsequent
replies?
The References field in MV responses seems to always include some number
@4ax.com, but so do responses to other threads, so that's no good.

I've just had a filter on his email addy, then plonk the chronic
knucklehead responders as they rear their ugly mug.
It's been working pretty good so far, but if you come up with a more
effective method, please, so tell.

Pan 0.14.2 - I've plonked him six ways from Sunday (took me a little while
to figure out that Pan sets the default plonk to 30 days) and just set all
his threads to "ignore". Seems to be working, I am now blissfully
Vandeman-free. 🙂

/me wonders if he's been killfiled by half of AMB for replying to Vandemann
😄.

I just hit the 'Ignore thread' button every time he posts (using Pan).

Fortunately, AOHell's newsreader comes with the option to add filters with:
1. Subject contains...
2. Subject Matches ...
3. Author is ... (my personal favourite)
4. Domain is ...
That provides a fair degree of customisation. Fortunately. it also gives you
the option to read "Unfiltered" posts if you wish to see what the monkey house
is up to from time to time.

Why does it wind you up so much about what ISP other people use?

Coz he's an Internet snob - it's called "reverse elitism" ;-)
AOL has not stifled my creativity on Usenet in the least. I ca nstillaccess
any server I want, if I want to fire up another reader while logged on. But
why bother?

Most of his posts are cross-posted to sci.environment and other unrelated
newsgroups, and most of the replies as well. Have you tried using this?
That being said, I've tried it a bit and it hasn't worked for me with
slrn. I just filter on him and a few other rabid responders (e.g. Jeff
Strickland) by name. There really aren't that many these days (compared to
a few years ago, when on-topic posts were rare on r.b.o for reasons other
than the current one).

Excellent. I'll try that. Thanks!

I just ignore his posts. At least that way I only have a single thread to
pass by rather than a dozen reply threads. And even though some people reply
to him, I can still find their other posts interesting - so I avoid plonking
every single person who replies. Heck, if I did that, there'd only be a
handful of posts to read.
It's not that bad, really. There are several other people whose threads I
don't read either (this ng, and others... especially on r.b.r!), for one
reason or another. Same difference.
The option to automatically kill the entire thread is cool. But it seems
that it's specific to a very few news readers. I'd rather not switch, and
ignoring an occasional thread isn't any hassle.
Outlook Express has an "Ignore Conversation" feature, but it still lists the
thread unless you change the view to "Hide Read or Ignored messages", which
doesn't work for me. I'll often go back to previously read posts for
reference.

That would work 100% if we could only convince Bill Sorni to stop
responding. I've killed most of the habitual responders, but can't resist
reading Bill's Quixote-like jousting with the old lunatic. I'm reminded of
the saying: Never mud wrestle with a pig, you both get dirty and the pig
enjoys it.
I'll live it up to the group to decide which side of the equation Bill fits
into.

Yes, it's a word. The wrong one mind, but still a word 🙂
Unless you really were talking about sexual indulgences with the doc...

While debauchery may refer to indulging sexual appetites, it does not mean a
sex act per se. Its definition is wider than that and can include giving
into drugs and alcohol as well as passion. It also has a secondary
definition that means, basically, failing to uphold one's duties. So, while
Sorni does not have to be specifically discussing sex acts with the good
doctor, I am not sure if the definition is wide enough to include posting
when one knows one should not. On second thought, language is ever evolving
and this could be just the new usage this old word needs to become relevant
again. Debauchery: posting when one knows better.
If that is the case, then this post itself is debauched!
debauched
adjective
weakened or destroyed by bad sexual behaviour, drinking too much alcohol,
taking drugs, etc:
his debauched lifestyle
debauchee
noun [C]
a debauched person:
He gave a convincing stage performance as the unpleasant young debauchee.
debauchery
noun [U]
a life of debauchery
debaucheries
Debauchery \De*bauch"er*y\, n.; pl. Debaucheries. 1. Corruption of fidelity;
seduction from virtue, duty, or allegiance.
The republic of Paris will endeavor to complete the debauchery of the
army. --Burke.
2. Excessive indulgence of the appetites; especially, excessive indulgence
of lust; intemperance; sensuality; habitual lewdness.
Oppose . . . debauchery by temperance. --Sprat.

There's a patch you can add to slrn, that enables persistent
scoring. You can then put this in your score file:
[*]
Persistent Score::= -9999
From: [email hidden]
Score::= -9999
Subject: Mike Vander?man
(The second score is to kill people talking about him, and make sure you
catch the common spelling mistakes).
The first score means that Slrn will now take care of dynamically killing
any thread in which he participates. This is the first MV thread I've seen
in a year, I honestly didn't know if he was still posting or not.
The patch is here:
http://www.xs4all.nl/~thunder7
You may have to install gnu gdbm to get it to work.
