OT: Google Groups New "Format"...

I use it (besides my two other accounts) to see all the posts in a group,
as I've got tons of filters set in OE...the new format that popped up
yesterday is a sheer travesty.

With all their dough why can't they get it *somewhat* right? Even the
advanced groups search function is screwed up much of the time, as others
here have mentioned...

I suspect they're trying to cater to flakey AOL users, who have convulsions
if an interface isn't all jazzed up.

If (and I mean IF) your purpose in using Google Groups is just to take a
quick look at all the messages, but not respond to any, why not just set up
another identity in OE, with no filters? Not another account, but another
identity. It takes just a couple of seconds to switch between various
identities.

That's not the purpose of setting up multiple OE identities, although the
feature can certainly be used that way. I used to use it to keep personal
and business email totally separate, for backup purposes.

In any case, shape - shifting IMO is a rude thing to do on a group in which

Do you understand that "identity", as defined by the OE feature, is not
necessarily the same as "identity", as you're discussing it above?

Two of the main reasons that many object to Outlook Express have been:

1. Top posting as a default.

2. Signature delimiter of "--" does not include the extra space after the
dashes (it should be "-- "😉, resulting in other newsreaders not properly
removing the signature from replies to posts.

Other than that, OE seems to function just as well as any other newsreader.
The top posting workaround is to hit the Delete key on the keyboard, then
hit CTRL+End on the keyboard to move the cursor to the very bottom of the
post.

The signature issue workaround is not to use Autosignature, and to just use
the Insert | Signature function after typing the reply and before hitting
Send.

(I still use OE as my newsreader and e-mail program. In newer versions of
Windows, it has been renamed to Windows Mail.)

As far as the Google Groups new format is concerned--I haven't really paid
much attention to Google Groups once they launched Groups 3.0 Beta, and I
don't ever use Google Groups for Usenet posting, but I can't really see any
major changes from what has been the flat web-forum style format for several
months now.

I wasn't clear in my previous message. I was referring specifically to the
"Identities" feature in OE. But, other users are limiting their
understanding of this feature to one meaning: Posting with different
identities for whatever reason. The feature in OE could certainly be used
for that purpose, but there are other reasons for using it.
