[OT] Is it Snowing Where You Are?

Forecasts have been vaguely forecasting snow around the place. Any
sign of it near you? There's not a cat's chance of me (ever) seeing
any here in the sunny strawberry fields on the South Coast, so I await
reports with great envy.

Plenty of rain in North London. No snow. No chance of snow either, too warm.

The denizens of uk.sci.weather are reporting snow all across the midlands
into Yorkshire. Mildenhall in Suffolk is reporting rain/snow but there's
no sign of it 15km away.

Too warm here. Been on phone to Peter Coulson (Audax UK Events
Secretary) in Northants. It's snowing there.

I cycled home from Leeds to Morley in the snow at approx 18:35 tonight -
'twas great.

Rode home from work tonight in icy cold sleet. Gloves weren't up to the
job. Spent ages trying to unlock the front door with numb fingers. Orrible.

Some snow in Peterborough, but it is quite localised as there is none
in Crowland 8 miles to the north. It is also big wet flakes and they
aren't settling.

No snow but it is *cold*. Did a round of Dalbeattie last night and was
too warm, had to keep taking clothes off. Tonight I went up there
dressed just the same as yesterday and before the top of the first hill
decided to turn back because it was just too cold to be fun (I hadn't
taken winter gloves - but then, I didn't yesterday).

I thought it was too warm too when the missus told me of the forecast for snow. We now have about an inch of snow on the garden!

I'm in south yorkshire.

Here in the Peak District I cycled (on 2 wheels) home in snow at 4p.m.,
decided - without having to think too hard - to take the trike to work
this evening, and have just got home again. It's stopped snowing, but
there are a few inches lying nicely and it'll probably freeze overnight.
So I'll be doing the shopping on the trike tomorrow!

Pretty cold here as well, really feeling it on my face on the way home. I'll
pack ice axe and crampons as I'm off to the hills tomorrow.
(taking the bike as well, not sure whether to leave the city jets on for the
ride in to the bothy or swap for the nokian studded jobbies..)

Sheffield, oh yes. My (top-ish) end got about 3/4" that is now turning
to slush, so if it freezes overnight it'll make tomorrow morning quite
interesting. It's brilliant when it does snow heavily, though - all
the cars go bumper to bumper on the major arteries, leaving all the
minor roads blissfully quiet (last winter, for example, I rode into work
and thought most people were staying home that morning until I hit the A57.

Snow is lying about 3+cm deep outside my house near Coalville, Leics, but
thawing rapidly off the trees. It's getting colder, though, so there could
be solid ice about tomorrow. I've collected No.2 sprog from Sheffield today
(by car). It took me about an hour to get through the city, in that almost
stationary bumper-to-bumper stuff mentioned elsewhere, then the snow started
just before I hit the M1, and accompanied me all the way home in the dark.
Horrible.

You're not MC Pitman are you :p?

I cycled to work today for the first time in a while, dry and not to
cold on the way in, but when I came out to come home again it was
freezing and sleeting. Thoroughly miserable ride through the city
centre ensued, with brakes at about 25% of normal due to the combination
of frozen fingers and wet rims. As I crossed the footbridge over the A58
a couple of cars went past with an inch of snow on their roofs, so it
wasn't far away. Once I got through the city and started the climb to
the house it seemed to warm up, or perhaps that was just because I was
working harder and moving more slowly through the air.

One good thing came of it though - a while back I asked here about
saddle heights and made an adjustment as a result, which certainly
helped. Last week I was riding the bike with my New Rock boots on (huge
Goth boots with lots of metal and 2" thick solid rubber soles), so I
raised the saddle a bit more to compensate for the extra distance to the
pedals. Today I was wearing baseball boots with 1/4" soles, and I
forgot to lower the saddle - and found in fact it was an even better
ride than before - I didn't use the smallest chainwheel at all and kept
wishing I'd a larger one than the max I've got (this is a cheap MTB).

Next year I think I'll investigate the gearing options, if today's
experiences bear out. The fastest I can sensibly pedal the bike just
now is 18mph, would be nice to cruise faster than that on the level,
againsterlies permitting.
