certain kind of person to enjoy this kind of thrill, don't you think? He

Yepper!

I did the Xcelrator at Knott's Berry farm. A half-size/speed version. It
takes, how would you say... mental preparedness!!!

Waiting for the front seats (about 5 ride cycles on a slow day) I saw the
"dragster" red-yellow-green lights light up in turn but the ride takes
off on the last yellow, so I was ready for takeoff. Others were taken by
surprise waiting for the green. <VBG>

I have a new policy: I won't ride in anything that's not maintained by
either one particular mechanic named Scot (with one "T"😉, or me. I'd
consider a roller coaster if I could borrow the mechanic's children, and
have them held at gunpoint while I'm on the ride. If I'm hurt or killed,
they die instantly. This plan has proven to be impractical, though.

They say: "Kingda Ka is a highly sophisticated ride and may experience
short periods of downtime."

I say: They're lying. That ride is closed far more often than it is
open -- I know a dozen people who tried to get on the roller coaster,
and not a single one who actually succeeded. I went with friends this
past fall and we bought one of those beepers that essentially stands on
line for you. For three hours they kept bumping our time farther and
farther back, and then it shut down. Talk about your letdowns -- you
spend the whole day growing more and more terrified and the reward is .
.. . nothing.

And we did, in fact, wait until after the ride to eat. Nothing like a
huge let-down to whet your appetite for overpriced theme-park food.

Some years ago something called Primal Scream Therapy enjoyed a brief
bout of popularity. A friend of ours had a session scheduled, having
read up on it. Then she went on one of those rides that freefall
backwards (at Knotts Berry Farm, I'm pretty sure), which caused a huge
instinctive scream out of her. She rode it six more times and later
cancelled the therapy session. -aem

There's a roller coaster on top of one of the casinos in Las Vegas,
the Stratosphere (a for cr*p casino, too). One of my classmates is an
engineer and he said that since that thing went up, you couldn't get a
local engineer or construction guy up there to ride it, b/c it's not
well built. A few months ago, the thing got stuck and it took rescuers
4 hours, IIRC, to get the people off the thing.

Well, there you go. My theory is proven yet again. When I want a roller
coaster ride, I know a few country roads where I can make my own, using a
car that's maintained by the most obsessive mechanic one could ever hope to
meet.
