OT: Reagan funeral - or not

Overkill! It is obscene for a man who has been dead 30
years. \ My god, Nancy she has been stuffed for ages and
been on display at Madam Toussards. They take her out for
occasions of low import.

Lol...that tune that you know as _God Save The Queen_ is
known here (with different lyrics, natch) in the States as
_My Country 'Tis Of Thee_, a popular patriotic song which
many think should be our national anthem instead of the
awkward _Star - Spangled Banner_.

When I first visited London in 1975 as a college student we
went to the theatre (Pinter's _No Man's Land_ IIRC); when
_God Save The Queen_ was played before the play some of the
more naive types in our tour group had to have it explained
to them that this was *not* the song _My Country 'Tis Of
Thee_ and that it was *not* played in honour of us visiting
Yanks ;---)

These are very somber State occasions. The last State
presidential funeral was held in 1973 for Lyndon
Johnson....one was planned for Harry Truman (who died on
Christmas Day 1972) but because of the frailty of his 88
year - old wife Bess it was decided to hold it in his own
hometown of Independence, Missouri instead...Nixon of course
hated Washington and so his was held at his library in Yorba
Linda, California..

By "State" funeral I mean the whole bit with the processions
and laying - in - state at the Capitol Building in
Washington, DC....

This Reagan media whirl reminds me of when Princess Diana
died...or going back even farther the JFK assassination.
Time stands still for a few days....

I think when Queen Elizabeth II dies it will be the next
"big" funereal media event....

All the ex - presidents (except for Clinton) have as a
matter of course detailed plans stashed away for their
funerals...Reagan's has been planned since he left office in
1989. This practice came into effect after JFK's funeral
because there was so much confusion and hurrying about when
he was assassinated (at that time there had not been a State
presidential funeral for many years), thus things are now
choreographed in advance so as to run smoothly.

plan on file and the plans have to be reviewed yearly and
updated as needed. NBC reported that Reagan's funeral plan
was 300 pages long! I'm sure that Bush wishes it was a bit
longer as it has keep the constant revelations of
unflattering news off the front pages.

funeral... that is the same tune as one of the american
propaganda songs, off hand can't remember the name.

It is kind of ironic that a president who supposedly
supported a smaller government and fiscal restrait gets
honored in such a costly way, but than again, its no
different than Reagan's presidency, itself.

That's interesting. I didn't know that about
presidential funeral plans. As for Bush, I guess beggars

Diana's death was an unexpected shock - and she was younger
and prettier. Ronnie's death was expected, hers was not (you
could say the same for the media frenzy over JFK's and JFK
Jr.'s deaths...). When the blessed die young, there is
always that wistful "what if?" speculation going on...with
Ronnie it was only "when?".

Princess Diana was a much greater celebrity than Reagan was.
After all, not that its his fault, but Reagan spent the last
ten years or so of his life outside the public eye, but
Princess Diana was very much in the public eye and she lead
a very active life, which included helping less fortunatte,
right up until the moment of her death.

"Piece of work" is a fairly apt description of Nancy....

I had a dream about her last night - that I lived with her
as her personal assistant (in the house my grandparents
lived in - haven't been in the place since 1965 - go
figure!). The final straw was when she started ragging on me
about the fact that I didn't keep the stainless steel
kitchen faucets polished to her liking....

I also just re - read her autobio _My Turn_ which frankly
should have been titled _My Burn_....
