Anything that will get a .177 pellet moving at least 800-1000fps will do
the trick on squirrels with good shot placement under 50-75ft.

crossman pump up type air gun good for about 800fps with the full 10
pumps. The Gamo will do 1000fps with a single pump FYI.

I owned a few guns years and years ago when I worked at Savage Arms,
and got real sweet deals on them as seconds to employees only. I owned
a .22 cal magnum rifle, which retailed for $240.00 that I got for
$65.00. Then a 12 gauge pump for about $20.00. Of course before we
took these home, we had our friends in each dept along the way, put
custom stocks with 30 coats of laquer on, special trigger mechanisms,
we had a friend who sighted them dead-on for us, and by the time I
took my $75 gun home, it was a custom made $1,200 rifle with dead
accurate sights. Then I thought, I should take up hunting. I mean I
had guns, and with my years growing up in a rural area it seemed easy

minutes I was face to face with Bambi, standing in the open, about 40
feet away. Even as I raised my gun she stood firm, looking, sniffing,
but not running. I stood there with my sights on her for probably 30
seconds to a minute before I lowered my gun and walked away. Sold all
my guns a short time later.
My extent of killing with a gun was a squirrel with my Crossman 760,
the cats [censored] of BB guns in those days. One shot brought it out of the
tree, but it took about 10 or 12 shots more to kill it, while it lay
there writhing and crying as I pumped and shot it over and over,
trying to just end it's suffering. Never much cared for killing after
that. I think the memory of that squirrel kept me from killing that
deer.
Oh I forgot to mention, most wild animals like deer aren't afraid of
me. They know I'm no threat. It really takes the sport out of
hunting...

A well placed BB between the eyes of that squirrel would have ended it's
suffering with a single shot...

There is a reason I shoot squirrels. I used to love them, (they are
cute) but they have been SO destructive! The destroy veggie gardens by
eating the produce and digging up any root vegetables and they have
chewed holes in my siding on the house and have chewed holes in my
greenhouse screens to get in there.

I just can't afford to allow rodents (even cute ones) to do that much
damage.

I own guns for three reasons:

Target practice (sport)
Self defense
Hunting varmints or processing livestock

In that order...

I've even shot rats with the crossman.

The squirrels have not been as much of a problem lately.
One of the neighbors out back of my property bulldozed an old storage
shed full of [censored]. I assume it was also full of rats because right after
he did this, my yard was overrun. :-P My border collie had a field day
but that was not enough! I had to carefully set up poison bait stations
that could not be gotten into by the pets. Once the warfarin took
effect, I lost count of rat bodies after about 40. :-P

It seems to have put a dent in the squirrel population too. The bait
stations were not squirrel proof.
