OT: Thunderbird filters

I don't know for Thunderbird, but can confirm that killing anything
cross-posted and killing specific morons works just great! I don't see
any of it, but can tell it's working when I show 33 unread articles
before I enter the group (this is tin on linux) and then see nothing. 🙂

It's a great idea, but I don't think that it's possible in Thunderbird
at the moment. I seem to recall it was an issue with Mozilla as well.

at the moment. I seem to recall it was an issue with Mozilla as well.

On Linux use a decent newsreader like slrn. Scorefiles with very
powerful syntax.

On Windows, use Forte. Good killfiles on that I'm told.

aaah, old school, stuff that works {:-)
unlike modern [censored] (no wp, no scanner, why is it I'm finding more stuff
broken under linux)

Or use slrn / tin under Cygwin which gives Unix like tools on Windows.

Or use Gnus :-)

I'm perfectly happy to pass on my slrn scorefile which includes how to
wallop crossposts by number of groups, how to wallop crossposts to
certain groups, and how to score followups so you can either see who
has followed up to you and score that high, or who has followed up to
someone you have killfiled and score that low.

Not that I understand slang mind you, these were mostly cargo culted,
slang regexps are a Dark Art.

Okay, found this. Note, I haven't tried it, and it looks a bit old.
It acts as a news proxy, so basically you configure it to point to your
news server, and then point your newsreader at the proxy. It supports
filtering of posts based on a whole bunch of stuff, including
cross-posts.

Dave,

In Mozilla you can highlight the message you want to filter out then
click on:
Message -> Create Filter from Message
I set the Junk Status to Junk and tick Mark Message as Read.

It should work for Thunderbird.

I much prefer Agent for reading USENET.

Ah, I've been wondering about a good 'doze based newsgroup reader (I'm using
Outlook Express at the moment).

I was using Outlook Express; have just switched to XNews
( http://xnews.newsguy.com ) after the latest trollage.
It is free, and seems to be pretty configurable wrt
filtering, killfiles etc. This is my first post with it.

And for people who prefer not to use the text console,
Pan is an excellent USENET client on Linux, very close
to Forte Agent on Windows.
