I would agree there is some truth in your comments about the
bike-racing community attracting some strange characters,
perhaps slightly above that of other sports. However, it
also seems to me that you may have a rather sizable chip on
your shoulder and are grossly generalizing. And how helpful
is it to advise people to practice "little acts of kindness"
just after calling a group of people A$$H***S?

I'm not experienced in newsgroups by any stretch, but I have
certainly figured out that most rbr posters are in it for
entertainment, and are not using it for highbrow discussion.
What entertains you may not be entertaining to someone else
and vice versa.

Mark better get back to contributing to the GDP...

Good point. I suppose it is very entertaining to many here
to attack someone that asks a question in hopes of a
discussion. I still am not sure why so many (not all)
cyclists that are into racing are so obnoxious. I will be
back on this sidelines, but needed to vent a little here,
due to the responses I get and to be honest the responses
that so many get when they stop by.

USLTA tournament tennis has as many [censored] as bicycling -
probably more, especially with the juniors and their
parents. I was one of them. As I became a more mature
[censored], I started bicycle racing. Now that I am a fully
developed [censored], I just talk about bicycle racing. So
here I am.

I've found that my development as an [censored] due to bicycle
racing and occasional [censored] commentator on rbr has been a
definite career enhancer. Firing career mothers that are the
sole support of their children has become much easier. Wish
I had more rbr training before I joined the military,
because I might have been an officer.

Searching on Jeff Potter might yield a few hits.

Okay, fundamentally rbr is not the best place to get help
for novices on beginning bicycle racing, for example. A
local club that welcomes new racers is a good resource
(didn't I suggest this to you in r.b.misc?) However, people
who can ask well-posed questions without an attitude will
get answers along with the flak.

Asking a naive question while simultaneously whinging about
the attitude problem before even getting responses is the
equivalent of wearing a Kick Me sign.

I used to believe in being overly nice and helpful even to
people who didn't bother to do their homework. I still do
that in real life (you have to when dealing with students)
but on Usenet, if you hand people answers, they never learn
- their next question is more uninformed than the first. RBR
posters aren't mean to you for pleasure. Tweaking you is a
tedious, painful duty, but we do it for your own good.

I have been around bicycling for thirty years and racers
have always been like that, with some notable exceptions. I
quit helping with races several years ago because the racers
were such jerks.

My favorite was the guy who gave me a complete ration of
grief because the volunteer driving the wheel truck could
not repair his STI shifters. I tried to explain to him
that the wheel truck was just there to provide his spare
wheel, but he just would not accept that. He wanted his
entry fee back.

Another wonderful habit is that of racers who come to the
registration table at the height of the rush and insist on
seeing who else is signed up for their race.

Guys like the Stetina brothers, John Howard, and Bill Shook
were never any trouble. They were gentlemen.

Curt's original post reminds me of Comic Store Guy (CSG)
from The Simpsons. Elitist people can be found in many kinds
of stores, generally they're either not aware they come
across like that or they do it for their own entertainment.
(I still remember trying to pick out my first first-hand
guitar, my guess is -- looking back on it -- that some
people were actually a bit envious I was getting a very nice
instrument they couldn't afford.) If you encounter a bad
attitude in a store and don't make any effort to bring it to
the attention of the manager, as they saying goes, if you
ain't part of the solution then you're part of the problem.
Problem persists? Take your dollar-vote elsewhere.

Now to be fair I've been to a lot of the Local Bike Shops
(LBS) in my area and only a few sales people appear to be
aloof or elitist. Most are very friendly and knowledgeable
and if they're not busy would be more than willing to shoot
the breeze with you on your type of riding, proper selection
of stuff, maintenance, etc. To assauge your own ego, though,
avoid the urge to deride others.
