Some of MartinM's posts have no references when they reach here (e.g.

Very weird, no obvious commonality at all (except of course all the ones
I've seen have been through my server and also through BT.net's server
which I feed from (this is different from the BT openworld server).

One datapoint is

This message appears (apart from path) identically in my cache to how it
appears on Google, and as it originates from Google their copy hasn't
been through the BT.net server (or my server either).

So you are seeing what you think you're seeing, it doesn't originate
from any one person (unless there's some very sophisticated forging
going on which is beyond me, and without wishing to sound too
complacent I don't think so) and it does not originate from any one
software agent.

Very weird. Highly improbable that your newsadmins can do anything about
it.

I posted some messages via googlegroupsbeta just to test it out, and one
or two of them do not seem to be properly threaded on my newsreader.

Google Groups 2

Same here, threading fine. Alan - do you have the main thread as well?

I doubt that its is a news server issue, unless it is messing with the
references headers or title of message. What newsreader do you use?

When I scroll back through the headers of MartinM's posts they are all
like that except for the ones he posted through Google and they all
thread OK for me (at least they do looking back over the past couple of days

Perhaps they are getting their feed from the same source, and it is
being corrupted along the way.

Looking in more detail I agree and its the newsreader that has sorted it
out anyway. Sometimes OE can get in a twist with long reference lists
and you have to go in and edit out all but the first and last for it to
post but the references do not look long enough in this thread for that
to have arisen here.

of newsgroups. I usually use a newsserver (free.teranews.com) and Outlook
Express but I have found the server is very temperamental and is usually
several hours behind so I have started using Google Groups as an
alternative. I prefer to use a newsserver - can anyone recommend a good

If you order by subject posts relating to the same thread will come
together whether threaded correctly or not. I tend to order by time,
however.

Same problem with Xnews and news.individual.net

the in-reply-to header keeps the message in the correct thread, but doesn't
put it in the correct place in the thread. At least not on Xnews. Perhaps
some of the more esoteric Linux newsreaders manage to deal with it better?

news.individual.net. Its the one everyone around here uses. You need
to register but its free and very good.

Given that you're using Outlook, you're on Windows. Given that you're on
Windows your best options are probably either Mozilla Thunderbird
<URL:http://www.mozilla.org/products/thunderbird/> or Microplanet
Gravity <URL:http://mpgravity.sourceforge.net/>. Thunderbird is (like
Outlook) primarily an email client which also does Usenet; it's under
current active development. Gravity is a specialist Usenet client; it's
quite an old program which has been abandoned by its developers and is
now maintained by users.

However, this doesn't solve your server problem.
