  1. Well they say you learn by your mistakes, well I sure did yesterday.

I was taking my Saturday morning ride in Brisbane, doing the St Lucia run.
Well I am only new to road cycling.
Well I was going up and down the rollercoaster hills, when I was in to big a
gear going up the last steep hill just by the St Lucia Golf Club, well as I
was flying halfway up the when I changed to the smallest gears really fast,
yes you guessed it !!!!! the chain came off, and it all happened to quick,
but it was an awfal feeling that I was unable to clipout and as soon as my
bike stopped, I tipped over like in slow motion, and fell on my ass, lucky I
hit a half grass, half tar landing area.
But wow this was my first fall, and I must say I am feeling that pain now.

Its a awful feeling knowing that you cannot unclip in time, and you know you
are going to go over, and with the chain off, making the pedals spin so
easilly, it was nearly impossible to unclip.

I have to admit this has made me very nervy now.
But I think the moral to the story is, is to make sure you are in the
correct gear before you are attacking a steep hill, and do not change down
    your gears so fast.

Ok now the misses is going to rub some more Dencorub on.

I wanted to share my story of my first fall, and maybe it might help someone
    from doing the same thing.
I must say I was very embarrassed, and only 2 people saw me, I hate to do
    that with a huge audience.

    Cheers, Danny

  2. We had a funny happening with clip ons - when we were fairly new to our
tandem riding hubby decided he wanted to use his clipons, I decided that
they terrified me and was happy with a strap over the top of my shoe.Anyway,
we were peddlling up the Kuranda Range, it so happened there were road works
going on, so the stop go boy radios his mate about a km up the hill and says
"I might let this tandem go through, let me know when they get to your end"
Now it was 35 degrees, hot as hell, middle of the day and we were uphill in
low gears. Finally we got to the other end, only to find the top stop go boy
had stopped all traffic just waiting for us to get through, he lets out a
big cheer, people sitting waiting in their cars all toot and clap, cheer etc
etc and we go slower and slower, ran out of gears, and hubby falls with the
tandem! LOL I just walked off the bike, but he followed it to the bitumen!
Oh how embarrassing trying to unclip with such a big audience, me laughing
my head off, hubby still lying on bitumen attached to tandem! LOL
PS, we dont have clip ons on the bike now

Don't worry. I fell off the windtrainer in front of the TV with two
cats watching. Nobody does sneers better than cats :-)

Oh Danny, I know that hill, it's a [censored]. I had run up it sooo many
times and was totally not prepared the first time I cycled, I jumped out
of the saddle and pushed as hard as I can and still thought I would roll
backwards, I only just made it!!!

Hope your wounds heal okay and your pride even better!

Just stop moving your feet! ;-)

Don't stress.. it happens to the best of us. Get back on
    and keep pedaling.

Yep, you should spot a rise and adjust gears accordingly
BEFORE you start to climb it. There's also a bit of a knack
to smooth gear changes under load (ie. climbing).

    Lucky you! ;-)

Like trackstanding in the middle of a bunch of stationary
cars and having your bag slip throwing you off balance
enough to make you hit the deck..
Of course I stood up and took a bow for the audience..

Oh, there was a dude on a Karate Monkey 29'er at the
Kona 24hr last weekend. It was the last lap and 'everyone'
was at the finish watching the final bunch of riders go over
the big ramp and complete the 24 hours..
There was a tree on the final corner after the ramp.. KM
dude seemed to go in too tight and he hits the tree..
    <crowed cheers>
He got up, I think he waved or took a bow and rode the
remaining _50m_ to the finish hehehe ;-)
Three cheers for the fully-rigid singlespeeders!!!!!
(yes, I meant to say it like that!)
