  1. Since hearing thew word "Trundlies" on here I've been dying for a
chance to use it. Well now I can:

I went on a Tuesday CTC ride today - A bunch of OAPs
trundling along on well specced but poorly maintained bikes
(each with a squeak or rattle), stopping off for coffee at
the Senior Citizens' Social Club in Lichfield (a secret
gathering of elders seeking cheap cups of tea and coffee,
and severely admonishing any attempted entry by youngers.
Fortunately a nice chap in my group offerred to buy coffee
on my behalf, although he suggested that I sat with my back
to everybody and kept my helmet on.)

Then onto Handsacre for a liquid stop - whereupon entering
the pub the group promptly pulled out their home made ham
sarnies. The pub it seems was actually closed but by
fortnightly arrangement it opens its doors to the CTC crowd.
So there was me expecting to be able to buy a cooked lunch,
and them with their sarnies. Never mind, I indulged in some
PROPER calories in the form of one bag of crisps, one
    Snickers and one Mars bar.

And then home for a shower.

    Hmmmm can't wait 'til I retire ;-)

Love and years from Rich x

The CTC here have a range of bikes from brand new Thorns to
ancient 5- and 6-speed Raleighs. I've never seen any of them
break down apart from the odd puncture. Average speed is
    only 12-13mph.

[censored], how do you get them to go that fast? My lot
average less than 10mph. Mind you, there's a couple of 81-year-
old tricyclists to wait for. They are the nicest, most
interesting people I know, so I don't mind waiting. I can
always bomb around at 12 mph on my other day off.

Known locally as the "Tuesday wobble" ;-)

Amazed at the poor maintenance. Looking at the Reading CTC
trundlies you can see why no bike shop stocks touring kit:
most of them haven't bought a new component since
decimalisation ;-) Our trundlies' bikes squeak inna creaking
door stylee, as in the creaking door hangs on the longest.
They are maintained perfectly well, the squeaks are the
result of never replacing anything until you've had your
    full 2/6 worth.

10mph is normal "moderate" pace. It's not about speed, it's
    a mobile social event.

  6. [Interesting to compare with the OZ scene, which did not have the benefit of CTC but has a huge contingent of reasonably well to do retirees who took to cycling in their retirement

Naturally they ride the latest model, usually well specced hybrids and some update them regularly.

Being new to cycling most are shy of on road riding but Melbourne has a huge network of cyclepaths/railtrails so thee are plenty of places to ride with facilities for the mandatory coffee stops.

One thing in common is the 13 mph/ 20kph average speed.
