I know many commuters use these hubs, and I couldn't find any English language instructions on the web on how to overhaul them. The tech I spoke to at Shimano was less than knowledgeable, so I took some pictures as I opened mine up and made a web page on the process. The seals on the hub are very good, so this shouldn't be something one has to do often. It's pretty straightforward and comes apart like any cup and cone hub, you just have to take care so that you don't damage the wire attached to the hub. Hope this helps.

There are a series of different documents on the site for different versions of Shimano Dynamo hubs.

There's actually a link to one of those document on the page I made. The diagram is marginally helpful, but ultimately useless because what Shimano labels the "Internal Assembly" is shown as one part. The right side bearings are inside this part, so you gotta break it down more to get to the bearings, and Shimano doesn't help you out at all. One of their phone techs actually told me it was all one part. So I guess by their reasoning you have to replace 90% of the hub if your right side bearings need work.

Now I get it. I have serviced these hubs on a couple occasions with just the diagram on the Shimano site. Your instructions and photographs are great. They detail the process that I blindly followed. Your information is very helpful. It would be nice if it were on the Shimano site. Have you suggested they look it over and consider putting it on their site?

I'm cleaning the bike after the wet, dirty PBP and have wondered about overhauling my Shimano DH-3N71 generator hub. Now I'll know enough beforehand to decide whether to even start or not.
