I've been working out on and off for about 7 years. I was in fantastic shape in the fall but then injured my foot and stopped working out until now. I'm 30 years old, 6'2" and 200 lbs. About a week ago I started back up in the gym. I worked out relatively hard (80-90 min workouts) including weights and about 20 mins. hard cardio. On my 4th straight day of working out I did legs. I didn't go too crazy, but I pushed myself.
That night of the leg workout I had a pretty bad sleep. The next night and last night I had brutal insomnia. The type where I couldn't really fall asleep or stay asleep when I might have dozed off for several minutes. I simply tossed and turned all night and in the morning I still couldn't sleep. So I am awake in sort of a foggy daze. I can't sleep...at night it's not sleep...it's like half sleep. So I took yesterday off from the gym but last night it was the same thing. So today since I feel tired i'm taking it off too.
I haven't really made any changes to my diet or anything. Could it be from overtraining or the leg workout? I haven't done legs in ages and my legs still ache. Too much shock to the body?
This is killing me, not sleeping. Please help if you can!
it's probably not overtraining. it's probably just that you're stimulating a lot of hormones to be released that your body hasn't been used to in a while.
you didn't mention what time of the day you trained. i usually find that i have a hard time sleeping if i work out within 3-4 hours of when i intend to sleep.
Thanks, that makes sense. Especially by working legs with squats. This is quite interesting. I train in the later morning/noon time so nowhere near bed time. Hopefully tonight will be a better night, otherwise i'm gonna go crazy. At first I thought it was the whey protein powder (sweetened by stevia, not artificial) but eliminated it but still same result.

Try taking an anti-histamine before bed. Helps you sleep and doesn't mess you up the next day like most sleeping pills.

I'm the same way. It's over stimulation as others here say. Monitor your resting pulse. If it's normal, you probably aren't over training. Another sign of over training is CNS depression. If you have it, you can fall asleep easily, but will wake up in a few hours and can't get back to sleep as well.
Makes sense. Last night I slept a little better, although I still tossed and turned alot. I guess those 2 days off helped. I'm going to get back to the gym today and just do arms and some light cardio.
I was also thinking the only change I made to my diet was that I added a B-Complex50 supplement, but I take it in the morning, not not. So for now, I have eliminated it.
I also made some adjustments like no more reading in bed before sleep, as well as closing my door instead of leaving it open (psychological maybe).
Thanks, but I like firm beds. I tried a foam before (not miracle foam) and hated it and it gave me back problems because i'm a stomach sleeper. Furthermore I was sleeping ok before my first leg day in a few months!
I still think it's the CNS and hormone release. As well as a rapid thinking mind.

<SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH> This is NOT miracle foam. There is no other like it. Try the real thing, it comes in different densitys if you like firm. But try it, it's not like previous foam mattereses at all.

Don't tease him, his BF likes him sleeping on his stomach.
Well, last night it took me a while to fall asleep, but after that I slept solid...feel pretty good today. Arms are sore from yesterday's workout and did shoulders and a bit of cardio today. Hopefully i'm back to normal...that is, until next leg day which is coming up soon!

You should find that as you continue to work out, your recoveries will come faster.
