Paging James Annan: supposed solution to disk-eject!

  1. I was browsing through a Gearshift catalogue this morning as
    displacement activity to avoid having to do any actual work, and
    noticed a quick release skewer '...designed to counter front wheel
    ejection arguable caused by disk brake forces'. The thing is called a
    'Neuvation Disk Skewer' and is similar to this:

    Note that it's also designed with especially long throw precisely to
    defeat lawyer lips.

    The skewer has an interlock button which must be depressed before the
    quick release can be opened. There is '...a set screw on the adjusting
    nut...' which is apparently intended to prevent vibration unscrewing.

    I had to admit I was skeptical when I first saw this, but actually it
    looks like quite a well thought through attempt at a solution for
    current generation bikes which don't have through axles. Worth trying,
    anyway.

    Yes, I saw that and thought it might be A Good Thing if disk brakes are
    involved. I guess that you still have to be very sure that you've
    tightened it enough before locking lever over though - I'm not exactly
    sure just how tight such things should be really, and tend to err on the
    over tight side, but then worry I might end up damaging something.

    It's still an exposed cam type.

    That's good (as long as the wheel bearings are adjusted accordingly:
    pressure from the skewer can bind them).

    James has seen it - we had a private e-discussion about it a while ago. The
    guy who's marketing it has been aware of the issue for a very long time but
    it's only since my accident and James's campaigning that the market has
    woken up and a demand been created.

    A decent attempt but the real solution still remains the redesign of the
    fork lowers and the repositioning of the brake calipers
