through some friends I recently found a converted panasonic fixed gear bicycle that i was considering picking up. I am going to check out the bicycle tomorrow morning, but would like to know at least alittle something about panasonic before i go(ive never heard of them except for electronics, but the frame looks 80s). ALso, what should I look for/test to make sure the conversation was done well (safe to ride). given that the everything is done well, what would be a fair price to pay for this bicycle. I was thinking between 150-200. Gearing is 46/18. I think there is brand new Rockworks cog on the converted road hub. Also i think he redished the wheel and put on the cog with a bb lockring.
I just converted a road hub to fixed gear. Make sure the wheel is dished correctly (it is in the EXACT centre of the frame) and ask if he used thread locker on the cog and lockring, otherwise it may come off. Also check chain tension (which you can fix easily), brakes, but otherwise, fixed gear is the ultimate in simplicity.

A converted freewheel hub isn't as good as a fixed-specific hub, but a lot of folks use them - pretty safe with a lockring but most of them can't go too far on (not enough threads).
Read up on CaptainBike.com about fixed gear conversions for the other important bits.
I don't like those cow-horn handlebars, but people do all kinds of odd things to their fixies - I sawed off the brake bridge on mine so I could get a nice fat tire in there:

Japanese, IMO take bicycles and cycling very serious. Expect it to be at its "dated industry standard". Get the bike up-dated...(if it fits) Make it a part of your rides...😉

I like the bars as well, the frame is 52cm c-c, which should be a good fit, anyways im out to see the bike right now (and maybe buy it)
well i just got the bicycle, everything appears to be done well, and there is very little rust (which i found surprising because its a steal frame and probably got left outside 364 days a year). riding the bicycle back into boston was a bit of trick especially on a few of the bigger downhills/in traffic but i managed well. not being able to cost is alittle interesting.... anyways the bicycle seems to ride very nicely and all the parts seem newish and evyerhting seems to be in good condition. at 150 i think this was a pretty good buy.
