    hi guys,

    newbie to the thread and a couple of questions if i may?

    i've got an old bicycle victoria flat bar/hybrid 21sp clagger. i'm not what you'd call and expert rider or anything, i usually ride between 100-150klms per week and a mate has recently offered some parts--notable easton ea 80 riser bars, shimano 105 derailler/cluster, deore XT shifter and levers and sora centre bracket (all in exc nick) and i was hoping to swap it on to my bike as he is offering these parts fairly cheap (i think that it's cheap--$300 the lot, is that a good deal??)

    anyways my quandry is whether it is possible (i know it might be hard for anyone to say) to switch this stuff over--my main concern is the cluster as mine is a 7 spd whilst this new gear is a 9, i don't know enough about bikes to know if this is actually my main problem!! the shifters/levers are compataible with the 105 becasue it's currently being used etc

    i know this all might sound a little vague but if anyone could help me out or offer a little bit of advice i'd be very gratefull

    Check and make sure that the 9-speed cassette (cluster) will fit on your rear wheel before you do anything. I beleive that freehubs had replaced the threaded freewheels when 7-speed cassettes came out but I am not really certain of this. When changing to a 9-speed, you will need to replace the chain as the 9-speed cassette requires a narrower chain than the 7-speed.

    $300 sounds a little steep for these used items. I would be especially wary of the cassette. If one of the cogs is worn, it will skip on you and you will have to replace the entire cassette. I think that you could probably find a better deal of better matched items on eBay.

    thanks dude, i'll suss that out

    re: parts price--i am in australia so maybe that's why it doesnt seem like such a good price? Any other aussies able to help me out? i've checked parts prices and stuff on ebay and in comparison seems like a decent price--plus i know the guy who has owned the bike using that gear and he is absolutely fastidious about his bikes/maintenance

    Doesn't sound like a good deal if the gear is used. You will not be able to use the full 9spd, only 8 (if you have a freehub) or none (if you have a freewheel). You would need a new chain. What do you mean by "centre bracket"?

    I agree, $300 is NOT a particularly good deal ...

    And, while good, the 105 rear derailleur probably has a more limited capacity than you would want (27t largest cog is Shimano's spec ... but, you can usually use a cassette/freewheel with larger cog) ... and, your friend's cassette may have a more limited range than you would want.

    FWIW. It could be suggested that there are often a lot of hidden costs associated with upgrading a bike/(anything!) ...

    If your rear wheel uses a Freewheel, you could replace the hub with a new one ... cheap enough if you can lace up & true the wheel, yourself ... BUT, not so much so if you have to pay someone else to do it.

    Unless there is something that is mechanically wrong with your bike's components, I reckon that your best-bet is to completely clean & lube your bike and its components ... replace the cables & housing, if necessary ...

    thanks for all your help guys. special cheers to alfeng who really put it into perspective...you're right, mechanically there is nothing wrong with my bike and it serves me well. if it packs up then i'll consider just upgrading to a new bike rather than fiddle with components i know little about.

    thanks again--you all have saved me three hundred bux!!!
