Pedal recommendations

Hi All,

I'm going to be building a new bike for the spring, and I'm trying to
determine which parts I will keep from my current bike, and which to
replace. The topic now is pedals.

I have some Ultegra 6600 SPD-SL pedals that have worked well enough,
but the cleats (even new red ones) rock side to side quite a bit. This
is from play and I suppose wear on the pedal platform. Since I have
wide feet with the cleats placed as far inboard as possible, this
means that when I ride my shoes are canted outward at as much as a 10
degree angle. This contrasts highly with the MKS Royal Nuevo Wides and
double straps I use on my fixed gear bike with traditional slotted
cleats. Those are level and solid. Having level soles feels much
better and I'm sure is better for knees, etc.

Hej, MKS still makes nice quills for peanuts. As you have the shoes,
why not go full grouch? I've come close to setting the fixie up with
some Sylvans every single time I see a pair of NOS slot cleats online
in my size. I like the feel as well--but I like walkable mtb shoes
just a wee bit more.

The problem with going full grouch on my "race" bike is that I only
have one pair of old shoes (size 50) that fit both onto my feet and
into quills. When these shoes die, I'm hosed. I scour eBay all the
time, but it's slim pickin's. Modern shoes have too much padding and
BS to fit in the clips.

I also use this bike for racing so getting into and out of the pedals
fast is a requirement.

How wide are your feet? I ride Sidi megas in a 45. I just use mountain
bike style pedals for the road, cross and mountian bike. Well the road
bike pedals are single sided. Any shoe I own I can ride on any
clipless pedal I own.

The 20's have a replaceable metal platform, replacing the wear-prone
plastic inserts on the 6610's.

I've used the 6610's. Two bikes, "same" usage. One RH (my "stop"
foot) pedal's release spring seems to have lost tension a lot
"earlier" than the other, while the lefts and the one right are going
strong. I don't know if any service/parts would be applicable here,
but I like these pedals enough to forgive at least one bad spring, if
such be the case. Still holds with toes straight ahead but will slip
out with wiggling.

Among other plusses, the cleat is much more walk-able than clips/
straps, Look, Campy Pro Fit. Haven't noticed "rocking".

I'm sure I'm not the only clips/straps user here who has foot problems
with said obsolete (please) pedal system being at least a contributing
factor. If I had to walk more in cycling shoes, probably would use
some sort of SPuD (SH 51) cleat arrangement. --D-y

Sidi 50 Megas are too small. I use Diadora, with some Rocket7 on my
Christmas list. I'm in the unfortunate situation where my 3 most used
bikes all use different shoes, with the most comfortable being the
least practical!

My spring tension is fine (I tighten it all the way) and I replace the
plastic platforms before they are worn too much. It doesn't look like
there is that much wear, but this rocking is irritating. I'll try to
take a pic.

I do very little clipping in and out (and no walking), so wear of that
sort shouldn't be a problem.

Probably better, but you can fix your old pedals by removing the
plastic insert, and filling the cavity with epoxy. Put in enough so
that resin sticks up above the pedal platform a little, then when it
cures use knife, file, or coarse sandpaper to level off the platform
to the desired height. You want it level and high enough that you can
just clip in. It works great... wears very well also.

Are the new 6620 pedals less susceptible to this rocking? What other
clipless pedals have a better solid platform? Speedplay? Others?

I have not noticed any rocking with Look Keo pedals with the cleats placed
as far inboard as possible.
