  1. The Beeb have this - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/3723704.stm -
article about pedometers and how 10k steps is about 5 miles and that's
about the right amount, per day, to keep things ticking over. Except
the reporter went over the 10k only when he deliberately went for a
    walk...

Has anyone got one of these and tried fixing to e.g. a knee so it
    counts pedal pushes?

I'm thinking it would be good to be able to say "yes, well, I cycled
to work and got my first 6k in before 8.30".

Ah, but cycling is about 5 times more efficient than walking, so cycling
5k is only about the same amount of exercise as walking 1k!

The road surfaces round here would probably get it up to 50k steps in
    five miles!

Sadly these things tend to work on the jolt when you hit the floor so
    are no-use for low-impact sports.

Just fit a speedo and gloat. :-)

    | Ah, but cycling is about 5 times more efficient than walking, so cycling
    | 5k is only about the same amount of exercise as walking 1k!

Yebbut, the "k" here is "thousand steps", glasshopper :-).

Actually, does anyone know what gear ratio (on the flat) is equivalent
in effort to walking, or am I asking the wrong question?

If you want a similar device that actually measures distance
    <http://www.polar.fi/polar/channels/eng/segments/Running/S625X.html>

(Costs a little more than your average pedometer tho'...)

Possibly, depends on more factors than just gear ration I suppose -
    for example your weight.

Walker's is giving these away at http://www.walkers.co.uk/ but they also tell
you that you need to walk 1.83 miles to burn off a packet of crisps. Does that
mean I have to cycle 9.15 miles to do the same work? No wonder the school run
    isn't making me very svelte.

Personally, no. And don't try to buy one in Portsmouth...
