    Just finished researching bicycle tires and I'm now totally
    confused. I need to get some new clincher tires for my road
    touring bicycle, with presta valves.

    The rims are Mavic MA 2. The outside diameter of the rim
    is 25" or 635mm. The distance between the rim edges
    inside is 14mm.

    The tires that are on there right now are Michellin HI-LITE
    Supercomp H.D. 700x23 C. They are starting to look aged and
    have a couple thousand miles on them.

    While it would be easy to just get the same size tire I
    instead would like to get something a little wider, because
    I have difficulty on gravel.

    My research indicates I could use a 23 or 25 mm width tire,
    so I'd like to use the 25mm.

    All the other numbers have me confused.

    Can anyone tell what size of tire to get? And any specific
    tire recommendations would also be welcome.

    If your old tire is a 700x23C, a 700x25C tire will fit on
    your rim. Wider tires like 700x28C will also fit the rim,
    but may not fit under your brakes.

    If they will fit in your frame and under your fork crown, I
    would recommend Roly Poly 700x28 (rivendellbicycles.-rivendellbicycles.-
    com/webalog/tires_tubes/10033.html). I know that they fit on
    Mavic MA2 because that's the exact combination I am using.

    If you want something a bit cheaper, try the Conti
    Gatorskin 700x28.

    It's pretty wide for the rim, but modern MTB tyres are
    *much* wider than their rims. If the tyre has a good anti-
    chafing strip where it meets the rim, it should be OK.

    Watch the brake adjustment though - the MTB tyres often
    run with a hair's breadth clearance between tyre and pad.
    A brake pad grabbing a tyre can lead to a very nasty
    accident indeed.
