It's generally true that negative reinforcement is not effective at changing behavior. This is especially true when there are no possible consequences associated with bad behavior here. On the other hand, postive reinforcement has been shown to be effective at changing behavior. The person in the office next to mine is taking a dog training class. They have talked about how positive reinforcement works much better than negative reinforcement, both for people and dogs. For some animals, using negative reinforcement is a Bad Idea. Trying to punish a killer whale is not a smart thing to do.
When you see a post here that you don't like, think about it before you respond. If you are attempting to punish that person, forget it. People who post unpleasant things here sometimes are attempting to get attention, and your "punishment" will turn out to be a reward. Just ignore the post, however you feel about it. You will accomplish the opposite of what you intend if you reply. On the other hand, if somebody who often posts bad things, posts something you like, that's the time to respond with something positive.

If people are needing attention, why not give it to them .. who is it going to kill? If someone needs attention, they need attention.... better that then being anal retentive.

I've never once heard of this being a "Microsoft" issue as much as just consideration for how people usually read from top to bottom. Allowing those posts to make more sense in fact. Top posting (which I was guilty of as a newbie) is annoying and considering the traffic this board gets, people drop in on a thread in progress and need a little nudge to come up to speed on the issue and what the reply means.

(laughing!!!) And then they came out with the 2400 baud, thought I'd died and gone to heaven! You could solve abends from home in fewer than three hours in the middle of the night, no shivering drives into work to fix payroll.

Usenet dates back to late 1979 shortly after the release of V7 Unix with UUCP. It's initial use was very limited and available almost exclusively at universities.
