  1. Hello,

I am new to this board and a novice runner.

I recently quit smoking after 20 yrs of this self-poisoning,
and started jogging. Because of my schedule ,the best time
for me to jog is in the early morning, as soon as I get up.

Now, my potentilly embarassing novice question is.......

Should I have the breakfast before jogging or not?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Try this. Eat a full breakfast, eggs, pancakes, bacon,
juice, etc. Then go out for a run. After a warm up do some
sprints up a steep hill. You'll figure out the answer to
    your question very quickly.

  3. gee.... thanks.

I guess it really was a dumb question.

  4. I think he meant that in his opinion you shouldn't. Go to
google groups and search the group for the answer to this -
you'll find lots of different views!!

My personal view is that you should play it by ear. I don't
think you should eat something heavy that will stick around
in your stomach for a long time. I have done this in the
past and have ended up with stitches, very slow
disappointing workouts and the occasional reappearance of
    breakfast 30mins into a run.....

Try eating different things and see what effect they have on
how you feel. I would say that it isn't essential to eat
before a run - some people even choose not to in the belief
that you'll burn more fat that way - other people simply
'feel' better if they do eat.

There's no hard and fast rule.

    Best, Dave

I wouldn't pay any attention to him. He uses webtv.

You'll need to experiment. There is a lot of gray area
between eating a banquet and eating nothing at all.

No, it was a good question and what you got was a smart-ass
answer. The answer is, there is no single answer. Some
people just rely on the food they ate the night before and
maybe slug down some fluid, others will eat light like a
toast/bagle with a drink and others will eat a full course
meal(but not run hard). Experiment with one of the first
    two choices.

Donovan, with all due respect, typing "dumbass" or "you're
an idiot" after every troll post you see is unnecessary -
they know this already, and are just looking for a
response.... ANY response. It's like food to them - i.e. you
are the one with the bucket of chum.

Don't take it the wrong way - I mean this with no malice or
anything. I just want to point out the... err...
    pointlessness. 🙂

It this case I side with Donovan. This was a brand new
reader sheepishly asking question, thinking he was
spanked by "the list," and not a malecontent, for asking
    a simple question.

I think we all agree that playing with trolls is the wrong
thing to do but we all do it at times and yes, Donovan does
tend to get caught up more than most in troll land.

  10. Geee... no need to start a bar fight. I really am a novice
and I really didn't know whether I should eat before jogging
or not and Mc gave me a good answer...

Yeah... I hope that's my childhood hero John McEnroe
because he would have answered it the same way! Advice
    taken well here.

Thanks to everyone who took time to answer my question.

Well, while you are at it.... if you DO eat something in the
morning, before jogging..... what do you eat?

  11. This is something you pretty much have to learn by
    experience for your own body.

Some people can run empty & some can't. I know I can't. Not
that I'm a fast runner anyway, but even at my jog-speed I
like to have a snack beforehand. Some days I take meds that
I can't eat for an hour afterwards, & I know on those days I
have to stick to walking, or exercise later in the day.

If you try running before eating & find you're feeling too
pooped-out along the way (outta gas not just outta shape
feeling), then try a small snack first the next time -- a
little o.j. & toast, for instance, or a banana. And a bit of
water -- sometimes the tired-feeling is also slight
dehydration, especially after overnight. And your reactions
& needs may change over time, too. Enjoy yourself! And
    congratulations on quitting smoking! bj

I understand. The comment was not meant to be about this
specific post, it was more of a general thing. Apologies to
both you and Donovan if it was seen as such. Again, I meant
    nothing "bad" by it.

I completely understand the problem with trolls attacking
new readers, but it must be understood that this is a very
common ploy to get the regulars to respond with well-meant
comments - and when they do, it's positive reinforcement for
the troll...i.e, "I will stay here, it's easy to get the
responses that I need to thrive".

  13. Yes, have breakfast. Eggs, bacon, and greasy potatoes sound
good, and you might as well have a couple of cigarettes to
start out the day too......They're no worse for your body
than jogging. You see, hearts have a predetermined amount of
beats, based on how good of a person you were in your
previous life. Raising your heart rate only speeds up the
    inevitable.

You're devoting way too much time to this thread. Believe
me, I can type "dumbass" much quicker than you can
pontificate about the futility of responding to trolls.

I usually eat something, straight high glycemic index carbs
in the form of waffles or a bagel. I nearly always take a
bagel half an hour before speed work. I wouldn't want to
eat much at all close to speed work, but for a slow run,
I'm fine just after a meal as long as it's not too hard on
    the stomach
    (e.g. beans, spicy food, etc)

Hi...First, Congrats on quitting smoking. I also quit over a
month ago (25 years). I'm not sure if non-smokers will ever
realize just how hard this is to do. My hat off to you!!!!!
Now, about breakfast...your just going to have to
experiment. I run in the evening, always after a light
dinner if I can. I almost always get severe indigestion if I
run on an empty stomach. Others feel completely different
and would not even consider running on a full stomach, so
just experiment with what works best for you. Good luck on
your new running and non-smoking! Virtual Hugs, jojo

Yes, I understand you can type quickly.

The point is that many of us have the trolls killfiled, and
I was politely asking you to not respond to every troll post
you see. I understand it's a free country and you have the
right to continue, and that's fine. It was just a request,
and not meant to be taken personally.

Ditto what others have said about it being an individual
thing. I usually just have some tomato juice before heading
out, but if I have some oatmeal instead I don't see any ill
effects. I wouldn't go out with much more than that in my
    stomach. But YMMV.

If you decide to not only stick with it but work your way up
to fairly long runs (more than 10 miles) you might see about
taking in sport drink or gels, or even fruit or energy bars,
during the run. You'll find a diversity of opinions and
    approaches on that as well.

    Good luck!

Generally, no. Specifically, so long as your work-out won't
extend beyond an hour (some would say, 2 hours), you need
very little food to get you going. You might drink a little
juice or a small snack (I like 1-2 fig Newtons) to get your
sugar up. But I have found that as I have gotten used to
running, except for races or tough long runs a couple of
hours after waking, I don't need to consume more than a
glass of water. In the cases where you do eat before you
run, allow yourself 1-2 hours for digestion and... err...
    expulsion prior to your run.

BTW, not a stupid or embarassing question at all: it's asked
    here all the time.
