The creaking has steadily worsened, and I have now noticed that the right side of the bar visibly twists (left side is rock steady). What's up - am I looking at imminent catastrophic failure?

Yes. Replace them immediately.
I had this happen before (Not on a Giant). Half the handlebars dropped off as I was approaching a roundabout in the days when I had cleats and straps... Interesting times.

You can always try. Take it back to your dealer and see if they will do anything about it. If you don't ask, you don't get.

Indeed. Most firms that give a damn about customer service will take this sort of thing in their stride. For example, EBC replaced an entire frame FOC for me (and transferred all the bits, and gave me a new headset for nothing while they were at it) that was 7 years old and had a 2 year guarantee.

Take them off and inspect them before riding again. If one side is twisting they're about to go, and aluminium rarely gives you this much warning, so you're lucky.

No I've never crashed or dropped it. I do seem to have been having a lot of bad luck with my bikes though. Two of my other bikes are currently having their frames repaired or replaced. now my road bike has gone. The only one left is my Brompton!

hi u may fined that the creaking is due to the bars being dry between the stem and the bar in the clamp if not come and see me at ben haywards and ask for steve i will tell u whats up

Warranty has nothing to do with it if the goods weren't up to standard in the 1st place AFAIK. I'd take it back or send the bars to Giant for replacement.

I wish... all the snow went last week, stripped off by the mild winds, but Saturday night did bring some fresh. Should be good snow here next week, as I'll be over in the NL. Amongst other things Roos will be checking out the "Liegfiets" shops in Amsterdam as the ongoing corruption of her soul to the Dark Side continues. It wasn't actually me that persuaded her, it was the Streetmachine...
