Viruses can be preserved in laboratory storage for many years. Thus it is
possible to test the duration of immunity to a known strain, and not all
knowledge of viral activity comes from observation of the wild varieties in
the general population.
Since genetic sequencing has become routine, the mutations and shifts in
circulating flu viruses have been tracked with remarkable accuracy. Of
course, this is not acceptable proof for someone who would not know the
difference between DNA and chicken soup.
