question about quill stem sizing

Don't do it...bolt will not be entering straight and lots of stress on
the faceplate. If either break, it will hurt, but may make a dentist
happy!!

Don't force the stem to work when you know that it doesn't fit. You
might damage and weaken the stem and/or the bar, possibly risking your
safety. 26.0 quill stems are still readily available and inexpensive.
Get the proper size.

Hi there.

You might be able to get a *USED* 26.0 mm stem from your friendly
neighbourhood bicycle shop. If there is a bicycle recycling centre in
your city you might get a stem there.

Even at $200 or more, a new bar/stem combo are cheap compared to surgery,
PT, bridgework, permanent facial scars, etc. Not to mention the dollar
cost of copays and deductibles.

There are always lots of used 26mm 3TTT and other brand quill style stems
for sale on eBay plus plenty of online sellers like Yellow Jersey, peter

Return the stem for a 26.0.
Or return the bars for a 25.4

Stems with removable faceplates are pretty tolerant of this mismatch.
The old fashioned stems with a one-bolt clamp (I assume yours is this
type) are not, and you should not attempt it.
