  1. Hello all,
I've recently started to workout and running (albeit very very short
distances! ) and I find that I cannot STAND the smell of water in the
water bottles. I bought a nalgene bottle hearing they are odor free
after a few of washes I can get a funny taste even from those,
especially if it has been siting in my black car baking in the hot sun.

So here is my question to you folks, are there any stainless steel or
glass water bottles at least 32 ounces that can be found ?

I imagine for most people the plastic is palatable, but I really dont
like plastic for the smell and the potential health hazards. But
surealy there are some people on this group that use something other
than glass for drinking water ?
I tried getting one of those thermos things, but its too bulky and most
of the bulky part is insulation! I'd rather the container just hold
water and no extra bagage around it.
    Thanks much
    Ani

I just use water from the tap in rinsed out sodapop or bottled-water
bottles. I reuse them a few times, then toss.

In hot weather, I freeze 1/2 bottle, then top up with cold water; if I'm
carrying more than one little (1/2L) bottle, I freeze a nearly-full bottle.
They thaw out fast in this summer heat!

If its a sipper-top you want, you can buy them to fit the soda bottles.

Which type of nalgene? the Lexan? or another type?

From days gone by, I have an assortment of leaking nalgene bottles
(degraded as described above) that also smell a little, but the recent
Lexan ones (from gifts or races) seem more durable and no odor that I
can detect, but I don't use them often (too awkward). For comparison, I
can't stand store-bought bottled water because of the plastic taste.

You might also be sure that you rinse them out thoroughly after washing
and maybe keep them someplace a little cooler - baking in hot sun makes
everything taste yucky, imho. Keep it low to the floor and cover with
insulation may help. Maybe start with it partially frozen.

I would never use a glass water bottle while running for obvious
reasons. Even my "glasses" at home are plastic 😉

Not sure if this fits your needs or not

I generally use some older UD bottles or reuse gatorade bottles with the
twist, sip tops IF I use water bottles. I'll use water for short runs
(1hr) in summer but sports drinks for longer.

My container of choice for carrying fluids, however, is a camelbak bladder.

The Swiss company Sigg makes metal water bottles. They're lined
    aluminum, not stainless. Sizes include .6 L, .75 L, and 1 L. Here's a
    few of the larger size:

I know that the slight funny taste/scent isn't going to kill me, but I don't
    like it either.

I use a sports drink (accelerade or cytomax, usually) and use bottled water
and that disguises the slight bottle taste. I find the lousy taste of tap
water more bothersome than "bottle taste".

I also throw my bottles in the dishwasher after every use, on General
    Principle.

  6. As a few others alluded to, fill it a quarter full and freeze ; it will
taste like glacier water. I went from never drinking water to only
drinking water using this trick. i think evolution programmed us to
prefer very cold water as it is more likely to be free of parasites.

  7. I don't know about evolution, but around here if I don't start with 1/2 ice,
after 1/2 hour I'd be drinking warm water -- it's usually over 80 around
here, maybe over 90, when I'm out.
That's why a 1/2L of mostly ice will be drinkable (melted) at the end of an
hour (when I want the second bottle).

A lot of this depends on where you live. I've always lived in places
with good tap water, but I know people in parts of southern Cal (San
Diego or Riverside, can't remember where they were at the time) and
parts of Fairbanks (natural mineralizations) where they never use tap
    water for drinking.

🙂 I hauled my own tapwater - kept cold in a cooler with ice blocks
(frozen milk jugs plus a couple other containers) - to Chena Hot Springs
for that race. I also took ice in a pitcher to add on race day since I
wasn't sure where to get ice there - didn't think they wanted me
chipping the ice hotel. I was surprised it held up since it's usually
blazing hot up in Fairbanks ... in the summer. 20 yr ago when I was at
the springs, I didn't really care for their tapwater - smelled like the
springs - but they have since improved things so it tastes normal now.
May have had something to do with winter vs summer also, but not sure.

  10. huh ? whats your problem ?

  11. Thanks for all the helpful replies.
I found this thing called Kleen Kanteen- stainless steel, I'm going to
fill it half up with water and stick it in the freezer and
then use it. I looks pretty light to me.

Are you planning to run with it, or just store your drinking water in
it? I have a plumbed-in water filter at home, and fill two 1l glass
bottles every night and put them in the fridge. Drink out of them the
next day. I don't bother taking a drink when I'm running - for a run
of less than 2.5 hours it's not worth the bother, as I make sure to
start well hydrated. I do have a water bottle if I'm doing circuit
training, and it's cheap and cheerful plastic thing, that I rinse
before use, fill with cold water from the water fountain, and store
upside down and top off, occasionally washing it out. It never smells,
    has no mildew or mould.

  13. Update:
I bought this thing called Kleen Kanteen from REI. Stainless steel,
light. I put it in my bottle holder and it stays nice and cool. The
only hitch is that it has no lid with an opening ie., like the other
water bottles, but i am sure I can find a replacement somewhere.
    Thanks all

i just use store-bought water bottles. what's so hard?
no cleaning required. could be refilled if you like.
could be frozen if you want also.

not sure if you saw the recommendation not to freeze (disfigure
container by swelling, but I'm guessing might be ok if you only freeze
    it partly full)
