Filtering only works so well, as does munging addresses. I am quite
satisfied with my methods for spam prevention. Changing the newsgroup
account occassionally is much more effective.

I've used the same email nic for a long time now on Usenet and I get ZERO
spams in my mailbox, any junk goes into the junk email folder for deletion.
Earthlink has EXCELLENT filtering...

Your "reasoning" in this matter sounds kinda "suspicious"...

I don't have to go to my junk email folder for deletion, as I never receive
the stuff in the first place. Over the years, the vast bulk of the spam I
get has been as a result of newsgroup postings. Filtering (after my ISP's
filtering) was not particularly effective, as there was very little in
common in the emails, though I could normally identify them immediately by
sender and subject without opening them. All were sent by zombie PCs that
had been recruited to send spam, and the target web sites they wanted me to
visit were predominately in China. Usually there was a pool of computers at
the target web site (the name resolved to many IP addresses).

At the peak of my problem, I got up to 6 spam emails a day. I am sure a lot
of people would be extremely happy to only get 6 spam emails a day. Now I
only get a couple a month. It is not worth further filtering to remove
these. If you are getting better results (meaning not even having to deal
with a junk email folder), more power to you. I'm satisfied with my results.

are things such as identity theft. At other levels some people "advertise"
that they will be going away for an extended vacation... almost as if
saying: "Please burglarize my house while I'm away." Then there's the
"permanent record" thing... I wonder if in the future whether things people
put out on the net in their younger day will be brought up when they are
applying for an important position. It won't just be a nude photograph years
before in Playboy like it was in the old days. Well, no Supreme Court
appointment for Sheldon, he's said so much that would disqualify him... not
that he (or anyone else here) wants that position! ;-)
