I was watching the one I ran over until the front wheel hit it. I was doing about 24 km/h. About a metre before I hit it, it stopped and raised its head to strike (could give a new meaning to the term "snakebite puncture"😉.
I believe they've got to be a certain size to be able give you a bite that'll get the venom in, unless you're unlucky enough to be bitten on a finger or toe.

And would also like to reitterate what they say in the links - cleats are not for tricks!
A couple of months back while practicing mono's I forgot I had the cleats clipped in. Over turned the bike, and landed flat on my butt!
Yesterday afternoon I ran over a brown snake (a bit under a metre long) on a bike path in suburban Canberra (Kaleen). It was moving quite fast across the path, and I couldn't avoid it. I saw that it stopped and raised its head as if to strike just as I went over it. I had just taken my feet off the pedals (was wearing sandals), although I think it was too small to have posed any danger to me. But it could have been a much bigger specimen... Looking back saw it disappearing off the path behind me. I don't remember ever even seeing a snake at close quarters before when cycling (bushwalking is another matter). Maybe I should wear shoes 🙂 Anyone else had a similar experience? John
Yup. I've run over a lovely green taipan whilst riding, only to have i chase me for about 200 meters. I wasn't game to put my feet on th pedals, as they seemed withing striking range. From the looks o motorists faces, you'd think they'd never seen a cyclist try and steer bike with her knees around her shoulders before! It did have a few goe at my back tyre though. It took about an hour for the adreneline to sto pumping. woof

I think that's the best "snake tale" we've had - truly the stuff that nightmares are made of. I guess you weren't going uphill at the time, and slowing to a stop too.
Reminds me of the time I came very close to a huge red-bellied black snake while out walking. I carefully took a slow step backwards, but immediately tripped on a rock I hadn't noticed, and fell over. Just as well this species is docile.

I have seen two tiger snakes on a bike path along the Eastern Freeway in Melbourne. The first one I stopped in time. The second snake I tried to stop in time, but instead went over the handlebars because I put my front brakes on too hard. I ended up on the ground literally face to face with the snake. It flattened out and reared up, but I managed to roll out of the way before it tried to strike. Next time I am putting my feet up and going straight over the top.

Aaaaagh, I would have given up cycling at the point I came face to face with a snake. I came across one too on Thursday night where the Yarra Trail splits off to the Koonung trail (possibly where you've seen them??). I always thought tiger snakes were a brown colour, it wasn't till I got home and saw some pictures I realised it what it was. The worst thing was it was lying still across the track and initially I thought it was a stick. Commuting along High St Kew is suddenly sounding a whole lot less dangerous. Dave B.

I did the same over what looked like a small copperhead having a nice sunbake in suburban Richmond on the bikepath near the skipping girl factory a few years back
by the time I realised what it was, it was too late.
Probably just as well as I probably would have ridden into the river in my panic

Riding in the local nation park, in boutnovember, i was caining dow some nice flat single track when about a meter infront of me the bigges bloody blacksnake ive ever seen decided to dash infront of me an dissapear into the grass. well after that , anything that made a nois was a snake
i keep a very open eye for them now. im glad it didnt chase me like i the other story though!

Ran over a brown snake on the Yarra Trail yesterday (24/2/04) just afte the narrow bridge that crosses the yarra (heading east, where the non paved area begins). I think it was a Brown Snake and was about 60c long. Having read this thread about 2-3 days ago, I did have th possibility of encountering a snake on my mind but still didn't get m feet out of clipless pedals quickly enough nor manage to avoid goin over its tail. Certainly got the adrenaline pumping
