My opinion is that Atkin's low-carb diet can be done without adding saturated
fat. I did a tempered Atkin's type diet, but increased protein with lean
    meat,
fish, and some soy products. I increased fat with olive oil and by eating
fatty fish. I increased both by adding nuts (mostly almonds) to my diet. I
    did
not cut out any but starchy vegetables.

I lost weight with ease, felt good, and my lipids improved a great deal.

I've done the same thing with low carb for the last twelve years. Lots of fish
and chicken, not much red meat, three or four servings of low carb vegetables a
day along with at least one serving of fruit. I have ground flaxseeds along
with ground almonds for breakfast every morning. I use olive oil for cooking
and on salads. My carb count rarely goes over 60 if you deduct the fiber and
when I had my physical in June, my doctor called to tell me my lipids were
excellent as they've been since I started low carb.

All the nutritionists in the world won't convince me that eating fresh,
unprocessed meats, good fats, fruits and vegetables can be bad for me.

Reasonable question. Someone crossposted to low carb and
sci.med.cardiology...among other newsgroups....and I followed up by reading
smc. Saw the low carb question and responded with my experiences.

What you are doing is not really Atkin's. Fruits and vegetables contain enough
carbs to keep folks from having hyperketonemia.

What I am doing is Atkins maintenance just as is set out in any of his books.
You obviously haven't read the books and you might want to check out Atkins for
Life as a starter. I lost the weight 12 years ago and have continued to follow
the plan to keep the weight off.

Is it really the diet or quantity of food? I had lost 8-9 lb by just not
stuffing myself so it was a "stretch" to finish my desert; the food is
the same, lots of starch.....pasta and rice = carbs ?

Have regained 5 lb as just bought a toaster oven and have been "trying" out
the french fries and dinner rolls. Intend to stop(?) with the fries after
the last bag is finished, sortof.

In my younger days tho, I can lose 5 lb in a month by just skipping lunch
once a week......the good old days..

It's the caloric content of the food. But diets appear to differ in terms of
the calories you will choose to consume when you are on them.

You appear to be saying that you can lose weght fine on a high carb diet by
just reducing the amount you eat. Or are you having trouble doing that?

I'm doing fine with a "high carb" diet; just reducing amount of intake
of everything will get me to lose weight. Eating everything is purely
psychological (when the food tastes real good), expecially on unneeded
tastety munchies. I never "supersize" tho as I couldn't even finish
the fries or the regular drink with a burger.

    I agree, for what it's worth. 🙂

Also, I think people can eat the wrong type of foods.
