So, can I get rid of the triple and go to a compact double? Do I
need the 28/28 or will a 34/29 be enough?
    ...
... I keep grinding, need to manage my breathing
carefully for the last few hundred metres, but finally get there. I
can do it, but it seems not without a triple.

It depends on a lot of factors- the main one being how you want to
climb. If you want to be able to crawl up a long grade, perhaps with a
touring load on the bike, then you need low gears. If you are the kind
of rider who will always want to power up a grade at speed and never
carry a load then you'll never use them.

It's possible, I daresay, to get the low gear you need from a double-
the "MegaRange" style cassettes with a 34t big sprocket would give you
exactly the same gear ratio as your 28/28, though whether you would be
able to get a setup that shifted smoothly over the range you need I'm
    not sure...

Still, if your current setup works for you... why change it?

    Cheers,
    W.

Of course not, if you're happy with the triple, what you need is another
    bike with a double ;-)

I'm currently using a distributed storage policy: one at home in the
shed, one at the bike shed at work and one at the station: rotate as
necessary for repairs and to get the right bike in the right place at
    the right time...

    Cheers,
    W.

ahh i have one new mountain bike with disks and mud tires and what not +
my old mountain bike with road tires, which snuggle up together in the
shed, which is full, even after lots of sortings.

and then there are two commutor bikes in the garden. i'm probably up to
my limits on bikes, at some point when i'm not going from one side of
the land to the other i might get a racer type, and then will have to
    see where that can live...
