  1. And no one has mentioned the most obvious benefit of wearing a helmet.
    When wearing one you will climb much faster as a result of improving
    your weight to height ratio.

    Just think how that works. Without a helmet I stand 5'10" and weigh 175
    lbs. So my ratio w/o a helmet is an even 2.5 (175 lbs /70 inches). But
    by adding a helmet I gain 3 inches in height but add less than a pound.
    So with a helmet I get down to almost 2.4!!!

    I'm thinking of having an extra high helmet made and if I can get my
    ratio down to 2.3 I'll be right there with the good climbers.

    See, all that talk about diet and training is really silly. You can
    improve vastly by just getting the right helmet.

    Theoretically, it could be addressed. First, you'd need to do a
    rigorous study to determine the equation (or function) predicting
    willingness to visit the ER. This function will involve insurance
    coverage, perceived seriousness of injury, distance to ER, time of day,
    availability of other medical advice, etc. This alone is a very
    complicated undertaking.

    Do that for _each_ of the confounding variables... and there are many.
    Only then could you design a "good" case-control study. To put it
    succinctly, it's not going to happen. Practically speaking, it's not
    possible.

    To my mind, the fact that Thompson & Rivara pretended to do it is
    evidence of bias on their part. Their "study" (and others like it)
    are, IMO, better treated as sophisticated sales literature.

    helmets do not make a difference. As it is, there's lots of good data
    indicating we'd be comparing one sugar pill with another sugar pill.
    (My favorite example: They examined the hospital records of every
    admitted bike crash in all of New Zealand over something like 20 years,

    What field are you talking about? Remember, what we're discussing is
    closer to a medical intervention than anything else - and medical
    studies are renowned for their difficulty, and the variation among
    individuals.

    Also remember, we're talking about evaluating the effect of one element
    in an extremely chaotic system (that's in the mathematical sense of
    chaos). The human body has enough degrees of freedom that its behavior
    in a bike crash would be absolutely unpredictable even _if_ there were
    no muscular impulses to interfere. You'll need a very large data set
    to represent the resulting very random effects of even repeatably
    controlled crashes - and of course, crashes are not in any way
    controlled.

    On top of that, the event of interest is extremely rare. To get your
    large data set will require either an enormous pool of potential
    subjects, or an extremely long period of study, probably both. If you
    really think such a thing is possible, I'd love to hear the details.

    But in the meantime, to say (in effect) "I saw a couple crashes, and I
    _know_ the helmet prevented death or serious injury" can't be looked on
    as having any validity. That kind of thinking leads to people saying
    "Grape jelly cured my cancer!!!"

    I don't know how people can be so stupid as to say say this sort of rubbish.

    Obviously this person can't see the circularity of his own thinking.

    You believe that a helmet "works" (whatever "works" means - it is a bit of a Humpty Dumpty word) and then you happen to observe an accident and lo and behold instantly your prior beliefs come to the aid of how you interpret what you "see" happening.

    Again, I believe you're confused about what I've said and what I
    believe. Let me try to help.

    "Danger" does not have a precise numerical definition. You might be in
    "danger" of embarrassment by virtue of what you post on Usenet, while
    someone else may be in danger of death if their parachute doesn't open.
    Both might be "dangerous" but they are much, much different.

    So let's talk about the danger as it applies to bicycling. Again,
    there's no absolute numerical test for "dangerous." How can we tell
    whether or not to label cycling as "dangerous"?

    Rhetorical figures aside, when people say something's "dangerous," they
    normally mean it has an unusual probability of causing significant
    injury. Obviously, "significant injury" includes death, but it includes
    things like breaks in major bones, blindness, serious disfigurement,
    and of course serious brain injury.

    So again, I believe the normal working definition of "dangerous" is
    "unusual probability of causing significant injury". But what is meant
    by "unusual"? Obviously, it must mean "significantly greater than
    activities which are not considered dangerous."

    It therefore comes down to a comparison. Consciously or unconsciously,
    this is what people are doing when they're estimating danger - they
    compare against other activities.

    fond of noting that "There are 800 bicycle fatalities in a typical
    year." (US figures.) There are roughly 4000 pedestrian fatalities and
    35,000+ motorist fatalities, but they won't tell you that. So I like
    to point to the per-hour fatality figures to put their hype into proper
    context.

    Second, a fatality is a well-defined thing. As I've explained before,
    "head injury" is certainly not. As I explained before, one way the
    most notorious helmet promotion study inflated its claims (to achieve
    that ridiculous "85%" figure) was to count cut ears as head injuries.
    They counted scratched jaws as head injuries too. You know - a boo-boo
    above the neck.

    Third, fatalities are accurately counted. There isn't any accurate
    national data on, say, broken collarbones per year. Data on lesser
    injuries is even harder to find. (I know, because I looked long and
    hard before finding some.)

    Bicycling does have its risks. Foremost is the dreaded skinned knee -
    the most common injury treated on cyclists taken to emergency rooms.
    Second is - horrors! - the skinned elbow. Or to be more official:
    "Minor injury of the lower extremety" and "Minor injury of the upper
    extremety," if I remember the exact wording of that research paper. (I
    can dig it out if you like.)

    If someone can't stand the thought of skinning a knee, they shouldn't
    bike. They also shouldn't jog. And, IMO, they should get some
    counseling, to put some realism into their life.

    But our real problem isn't skinned knees. Our problem, as cyclists, is
    people who are bent on portraying cycling as _very_ dangerous. The
    most irritating expression of this is "_Never_ ride without a helmet!"
    Why "never"? Why, because there's a significant probability that
    you'll fall off your bike, hit your head, and either die or be mentally
    disabled, of course!

    EXCEPT THAT IS FALSE! The probability is negligible! There is _more_
    probability of that happening while walking in a city crosswalk! There
    is about as much probability of that happening while riding in a car!
    In fact, I once read that there are actually more serious brain
    injuries from swimming - from anoxia in near-drownings - than there are
    on bikes!

    Will anyone tell you that? Of course not. Lovers of swimming are
    smart enough to promote their activity as pleasant family fun,
    requiring only moderate care, even though there are several times more
    drownings than bike deaths each year. Cities luring tourists never,
    ever suggest helmets when strolling around seeing the sights, even
    though your risk of head injury per hour is higher than cycling. Car
    manufacturers would send armies of lawyers to battle any hint that
    riding in a car causes an unusual number of head injuries, even though
    it's by FAR the number one cause.

    Only in cycling do we have proponents of the activity disparaging the
    activity. How foolish can we be?

    for mandatory goggle laws which would also eliminate a goodly

    The line that "cycling is dangerous" is nonsense on stilts.

    Living is dangerous!

    How dangerous is the question? Any statement of how dangerous any activity is needs to be put into some relative perspective. Dangerous compared with what? Is so-and-so a more dangerous activity than such-and-such? How do you know that? How do you evaluate that relative dangerousness? Is it measurable at all (in practice)?

    Saying that any activity is "dangerous" is so vague as to be meaningless in and by itself. Standard practice is to express risk as comparative or "relative risk"

    Attempting to try a quantitative relative risk is a forlorn and perhaps futile venture - It simply isn't amenable to a reliable estimation.

    But that doesn't stop the scarmongers out there from making the vacuous statements that cycling is dangerous.
    It's clear to see that such silly statements are used in order to scare people into wearing a helmet.

    And that's another informal fallacy - the argument appealing to fear of some scarey bogey: argumentum ad baculum - is what it's called.

    Intellectually I want to agree that cycling doesn't have to be 'dangerous',
    and I tell my friends that it's not if you have adequate skills.

    There are times when the sun is out and the pavement is flying by and I'm
    feeling in control that 'danger' is the furthest thing from my mind on the
    bike.

    Other times, though...usually when I'm not yet riding, but -thinking about
    going riding', and maybe it's raining, or the traffic is heavy. It's then
    that the idea of going out and riding gives me pause.

    Still, once I get out there the feeling of skill and control takes
    over...heh. Good thing. ;-)

  18. First of all let me say that if someone doesn't want to wear a helmet, it's
    just fine by me. If your state has a helmet law and you don't agree with it
    then you have the choice of compiling or defying that law. If it's
    important enough to warrant the time posting your complaints here and trying
    to convince others that helmet use is a needless hassle, then it should be
    worth the risk of a ticket or two.

    For me, I believe helmets can help avoid head injuries. In a perfect world
    I wouldn't have to concern myself or protect myself against potholes, jerks
    in cars, crowded trails or moronic dogs. But, at least where I live and
    ride, all of those conditions exist in spades and all have the potential of
    putting me in a dangerous situation. Thankfully it's been many years since
    I've had the misfortune of crashing but I have friends that haven't been so
    lucky and we all pretty much agree that wearing helmets isn't a bad idea.

    The argument that cycling isn't any more dangerous than walking is [censored].
    I don't walk at 20+mph and I don't walk around speeding traffic. If the day
    comes that I have to dump my bike to avoid an idiot driver I'll be able to
    live with and heal from some road rash or even a broken collarbone, I might
    not be so resiliant if I get a concussion or closed head injury, both of
    which can be avoided with the proper use of a helmet.

    Having said all that, I do think that it should be a personal decision.
    With the exception of multi-use trails on state property, I see no reason to
    legislate helmet use. Of course if your choice is to ride sans helmet and
    you bust your noggin open tangling with a car, don't try to sue the driver
    because you end up drooling on yourself for the rest of your life. If you
    don't want the legal system to legilsate policies to protect you, then don't
    try to use it when your choices adversly effect your life.

    putting me in a dangerous situation. Thankfully it's been many years since
    I've had the misfortune of crashing but I have friends that haven't been so
    lucky and we all pretty much agree that wearing helmets isn't a bad idea.

    I don't walk at 20+mph and I don't walk around speeding traffic. If the day
    comes that I have to dump my bike to avoid an idiot driver I'll be able to
    live with and heal from some road rash or even a broken collarbone, I might
    not be so resiliant if I get a concussion or closed head injury, both of
    which can be avoided with the proper use of a helmet.

    Having said all that, I do think that it should be a personal decision.
    With the exception of multi-use trails on state property, I see no reason to
    legislate helmet use. Of course if your choice is to ride sans helmet and
    you bust your noggin open tangling with a car, don't try to sue the driver
    because you end up drooling on yourself for the rest of your life. If you
    don't want the legal system to legilsate policies to protect you, then don't
    try to use it when your choices adversly effect your life.


    Hi, I pretty much agree with you, until the last paragraph. If you are
    in a car accident that isn't your fault, sueing, if necessary, should
    not be determined by helmet use. In a really bad accident, you may end
    up with a head injury, even with a helmet. To be realistic, I think
    helmets offer some protection, but that protection is limited. Fault
    should dtermine possible sueing, not what you are or are not wearing.

    I prefer to wear a helmet, but I can't forget that as kid, nobody wore
    helmets. I'm 50 years old, and I am now more cautous in all endeavors,
    I don't like to get hurt. At the same time, I don't think the risk of
    getting hurt is very high. It is one of those things where being
    prepared, requires little effort.

    When my Grandma was 83 years old, she fell in her basement, going to
    stoke more coal in her furnace. The blow to her head, created a tumor
    of some sort and they did surgery to remove it. She ended up in a
    nursing home and passed at 85. To me, this doesn't strengthen the
    arguement that we should then where helmets, at "all" times. What it
    showed me was that even what could be a minor blow to the head, could
    end up being serious.

    Helmets, should be a personal choice and those of us who choose to
    wear them, help no one by overstating the risks. At the same time
    those anti-helmet people tend to consider nothing less than serious
    injury, when discouaging helmet use. If I were to forget to unclip and
    bump my head, I would rather have a helmet on. But, that's just me.
    And I really find it absurd to suggest that wearing a helmet, means
    that you are claiming bicycling to be dangerous.

    Obviously to me, a mandatory helmet law wouldn't effect me, not that I
    support one. What I find odd, is that supposedly 30% will quit riding
    when faced with a MHL. If they made tights a requirement, a no shorts
    law, I would still ride. Maybe a bad or silly example, but with my
    love of riding, I would not quit over a helmet or pants requirement.

    The above is my opinion and feelings on the subject. Kind of, my
    statement for the record. I will not debate it.

    Anyway, it's time to go riding.

    In the US, there haven't been more than 1000 bike fatalities for many,
    many years - since the 1970s, IIRC.

    If every Google hit actually represents a "Helmet Saved My Life" story,
    then helmet wearers are _hundreds_ of times more likely to _need_ head
    protection.

    More likely, of course, is that they're just hundreds of times more
    deluded.
