    Jesus and Satan

    Quoted message said:

Jesus and Satan were having an ongoing argument about who was better at
using the computer. They had been going at it for days, and God was
    tired
    of hearing all the bickering.

    Quoted message said:

Finally, God said, "Cool it. I am going to set up a test which will
    take
two hours and it will judge who does the better job." So Satan and
    Jesus
sat down at the keyboards and typed away.

    Quoted message said:

    They moused.
    They did spreadsheets.
    They wrote reports.
    They sent faxes.
    They sent e-mail.
They sent out e-mail with attachments.
    They downloaded.
    They did some genealogy reports.
    They made cards.
    They did every known job.

    Quoted message said:

But, ten minutes before the time was up, lightning suddenly flashed
    across
the sky, thunder rolled, the rain poured, and of course, the
    electricity
    went off.

    Quoted message said:

Satan stared at his blank screen and screamed every curse word known in
    the
    underworld.

    Quoted message said:

    Jesus just sighed.

    Quoted message said:

The electricity finally flickered back on, and each of them restarted
    their
    computers.

    Quoted message said:

Satan started searching frantically screaming, "It's gone! It's all
    gone!
I lost everything when the power went out!"

    Quoted message said:

Meanwhile, Jesus quietly started printing out all his files from the
    past
    two hours.

    Quoted message said:

Satan observed this and became even more irate. "Wait! He cheated!
    How
    did he do it??!!"

    Quoted message said:

    (You'll love the punch line....)

    Quoted message said:

    God shrugged and said,
    > > >

So, tell us Andrew, if the same joke was told without the reference to
Satan, would it still be funny? For example: Jesus was showing he computer
prowess to the hosts of heaven. He was busy working up a spreadsheet showing
a list of the saved souls and it was taking a long time to compile.
Suddenly, the power went out. Everyone gasped knowing how much work had been
lost. Jesus just sighed. When the power came back on, Jesus when right back
to work. When he finished only moments later, the cherubs were astonished at
quickly he recovered and asked St. Peter how he did it. St. Peter smiled and
    responded "Jesus saves!"

If it is funny, who or what is put down?

Oh, come on. How obvious does it have to be. It's electrons, of
    course. And the power company.

Poor Chung advances another of his "theories" (like caloric density
and caloric usage, etc.) that humor is funny because, and only
because, it "puts down" someone or something. He's too dim to see that
it relies on wordplay in the example provided and that nothing is
    denigrated.

But, of course, he'll never change his mind - like he did about his
2PD when at first it was "use common sense" and now is "talk to your
doctor." Poor, dim guy realized he was giving medical advice.

<LOL> Wonderful. It's *still* funny, but not as funny *to Chung*
because it doesn't "put down" someone. And he still misses the point
that it's merely wordplay with no "victim."

But Chung *stays* funny no matter what...

Andrew, a joke is something that produces laughter. The dictionary says it's

<LOL> Now that's funny. Chung chooses to ignore the formal definition
and use his own interpretation. A joke has a climactic humorous twist.
If humorless Chung doesn't laugh, it doesn't mean that it isn't a
joke. It means that Chung is humorless. Still.

But it's an interesting thing that Henny Chungman posits above. A joke
ceases to be one when the malice is gone (no "put down"😉 and moves to
another level in his continuum of humor. There are levels, like
    Chung's future home. Read Dante...
