No, the remailers almost never know the origin of messages. Most
automated uses of remailers use _chains_, with encryption at each
stage. The traffic is unreadable except, maybe, at the exit stage. The
origin is of course then shielded by chains of remailers.

Second, most remailers neither look at traffic nor retain logs. Most
have scripts to automatically flush logs.

In the U.S., ISPs and relay nodes are explicitly protected from
liability for what passes through their nodes (Congress specifically
wrote this into a law a few years ago).

As for MIT being embarassed, this is silly. Far worse things than some
schoolyard insults have flowed through their systems.
