rear brakes

The brakes should be toed in at end of the pads that are toward the front of the bike. Look at your front brakes (if they don't squeak) and toe them in the same way.

Don't toe them the other way. The brakes will become "grabby" and it will be hard to keep the rear wheel from locking up every time you aply the brake. Locking up wheels is generally a bad thing.

Are the pads old? Sometimes old pads will squeal even if they are toed in. You may need to replace them if that is the case.

😄 Many thanks for the posts, y'all. I just got bike - first one since middle school. Set out on my first ride this evening and was mortified to hear the brakes squealing like a banshee. The slightest tap was terrible. Then I followed the instructions you pointed me to on "toeing in" . After a couple seconds of tinkering, I'm coasting quietly to a stop.

Brobdingnagian, actually. I out-grew my bike at the end of middle school. And when I started driving a Buick in early high school, my bike days were over :eek: - til now.
