I just looked up Ultegra freehub on the Shimano site. It lists FH-6600 as 8/9/10-speed. Since it doesn't list any alternate parts I'd assume that the same hub will work without modification for all all three cassettes.

For the most part they are compatible. There are a few caveats, however, such as the Shimano 10-speed DA wheelsets (FH/WH-7800)will not work with 9-speed cassettes.

Most wheel manufacturers will have info on their partiuclar models. It is most common to need a spacer when going the other way than you are talking about (i.e. installing a 10-speed cassette on a legacy 9-speed freehub)

cassette is the same width , only spacing between cogs changes but somebody did talk about the splines being different for 10 speed so it might need a different freebody - will ask at the shop this evening , reply friday .

It is my understanding that the 10 speed cassette is narrower and will require spacers. I have always done my own upgrades on my mountain bike, but with all the fast techno changes now I rely on the mechanics at the bike shop.

Having checked : it is possible to swap from 8 speed to ten speed without changing anything on the wheelhub / freewheel - I did ask and it seems that no spacers need to be added , though in the case of 8 & 9 speed cassettes it was often a good idea to use a very thin washer behind the cassette to get a more stable steup when tightened so this may well be an option on the ten speed .
