On my tour bike I have Mavic Classics Elite 1999(?) wheels.The rear dropout measures 135mm. I would like to replace the Mavic Classics Elite with Campy Centaur hubs. Would it be possible to do this even though the Campy hubs are made for 130mm dropouts? If not, is there a work-around for this? I read somewhere about using washers to make up the the 5mm distance, but was wondering if I can get by just by using the hubs QR to squeeze the rear dropouts closer together when installing the rear wheel. I plan on lacing (3X) the Campy hubs to 36h Mavic T519 rims and do mostly Carridice saddle bag touring.

If the axle is long enough, the 5mm washers are the way to go.

I suggest that you respace to 135 using all the washers on the left side if you must use a hub designed for 130 mm. You will need to center based on the 5 mm added to the left side.

BTW: You don't really need a lot of axle sticking out past the lock nuts. One hub I respaced out to 130mm has only ~1mm per side but it works fine.
I'm looking to do the same thing, and asked a simlar question a little while back. Several highly respected participants here told me it was ok as well, and I believe them. What has thrown me off is that when I go to a LBS to get some washers to do this, they act like they don't want to be party to such a (non-revenue generating) hack. They would rather change out the axle, and have the wheel redished. Have others found LBSs tend to be more conservative? Maybe they are just being cautious given our litigious society.
And if the axle is not long enough, get a longer one and use 5mm of washers.
Unfortunately, that's not an option. A Campagnolo Centaur hub uses a special aluminium axle that comes in only one width, and won't readily accept spacers.

Good point. Incidentally, I've done it the other way too - taking a 126mm hub down to 120mm for a 5 speed bike. The wheel ended up completely undished, which was nice.
You can't lengthen the axle for a current model centaur (or Chorus or Record) hub except by changing out the axle endcap for a longer one. As these longer endcaps don't actually exist as an item that can be purchased, I machined up some 5mm longer endcaps. The threads on the existing Campagnolo endcap aren't long enough to allow it to be spaced out with washers to anywhere near 135mm.
You can find a description of the modification I made at tip.net.aucampag135Open ↗. I've been riding a couple of wheels modified in this way for about 18 months without encountering any problems.

Nice posting, Nick. Nice pictures and explanation as well. I am a little surprised that brass is strong enough for the job. I know it as a nice to machine. I also know that Chris King uses some kind of a similar solution. I don't remember what material they chose.

I measured the rear hub width on my Mavic Classics Elite. Lo and behold , it measures 130mm. It turns out the LBS sold me a hub that wasn't meant for my 135mm dropouts. But wait! Didn't I do a 800k tour in the Italian and Swiss Alps on these wheels with ne'er a problem? WTF!?! Well I have another rear wheel that I keep just in case my other rear wheel destructs. This wheel is for my race bike and has a Campy Record hub laced 3X. I decided to try putting it on my tour bike and just squeeze the dropouts closer by using the QR. By my observation, I think it'll work. I don't know about spacers this, new axle that, but from what I saw it looks like all I need to do is just put the wheel on and clamp it in using the QR and off you go. What am I overlooking?
