Rear Rim

  1. Dear All,
    There is a bulge on one side only of the rear wheel rim.
    Would any one care to speculate as to whether the rim is about to go or it
    is the result of a bump.

    Dunno, have you hit any bumps? I think you may have noticed one big
    enough to dent the rim.

    put a bit more pressure in the tyre. If the rim bulges a bit more,
    then Yes it is probably too thin. Best to put on some safety specs

    put a bit more pressure in the tyre. If the rim bulges a bit more,
    then Yes it is probably too thin. Best to put on some safety specs

    And earplugs.

    How old (i.e. how many miles) is the rim? If there is a possibility it's
    worn out, replace, because a rim letting go is not funny. Replacing a
    rim (with one of identical size) is much easier than building a wheel
    from scratch.

  6. I followed a hint earlier and deflated the tyre. The rim felt firm and
    didn't change shape. This suggests to me a bash. It is curious though that
    there is no hint of a bulge on the other side of the rim.

    The wall of the rim is presumably aluminium, so isn't elastic. If it
    was deformed through pressure and insufficient thickness it has a new
    shape, I don't think it would spring back as the pressure was
    released.

    Well there you go, I stand corrected.

    Generally if I bend a piece a aluminium and then let go, it stays
    bent. I didn't think a rim deformation would spring back into it's
    original form under the above conditions.

    It all depends how far you bend it - same as with most metals, standard
    hookes law type stuff. Wheels are particularly good examples - eg the
    deformation of the rim at the bottom of the wheel (see spokes
    hanging/standing :-) ) is definitely elastic, otherwise it just wouldn't
    work!
