  1. I was searching through my e-mail archives and I found this Deep Fried
Hostess Twinkies recipe that was printed in the Sacramento Bee a few
years ago. This was when the California State Fair was selling these
things. I haven't tried this recipe (and won't). Have fun.

    Deep Fried Hostess Twinkies

Place 10-12 Twinkies in refrigerator for cooling. Roll in flour, then
    roll in a batter of:

    1 cup flour
    1 tablespoon malt vinegar
    1 teaspoon baking powder
    1 teaspoon salt
    12 ounces water
    12 Hostess Twinkies

Batter should be mixed until it is the consistency of a custard. Drop
the battered Twinkie into an industrial deep fryer for about 90
seconds, just until the filling is starting to melt and the outside is
a ''nice golden brown.'' Top with powdered sugar, cut in half on the
bias, and serve with a four-berry coulis.

To make the coulis: Put equal quantities of frozen raspberries,
blackberries, strawberries and blueberries into a pan on low heat with
a tablespoon of sugar per each cup of berries. When mixture begins to
boil, put in a blender. Then put it through a sieve.

So are you publishing this to see how many try it and survive?

Some years ago there was a website devoted entirely to the author's
attempts to destroy a Hostess Twinkie. He burned one to a crisp in an
oven, microwaved them for hours, even took a blowtorch to one. Put them
in acid. No matter how hard he tried, or how inventive he got, he
could't actually destroy one. Burn them, mangle them, crush them, yes.
But never destroy one. Whoever owned Hostess at the time went after him
in court eventually, and another truly creative website was lost to us.

What could possibly be the basis of a lawsuit? Surely he can do
anything he wants with a Twinkie after he buys it. And why would they
sue? Isn't "any publicity good publicity"? -aem

No. I think this recipe would be primary enjoyed by the under 50 crowd.

I'm over 50 and this recipe does not appeal to me.

There is still a Peeps "Research" website where similar things are done

This sounds like the website you describe:

  6. LOL! Didn't know they were back in business. They've revamped the site,
made it less of an open attack on Twinkies, more just humorous
experiments, than what it used to be. But the point is still there, if
    not so obvious.

My first comment, Rusty, was intended as a joke. Sorry I forgot to put
    in the laugh track! 🙂

Well, I'm under 50 (41 y.o.) and the whole idea of deep fried
cookies, cakes, and candy bars grosses me out. And I'm a junk
    food junkie, too...

I love this line from the site:

I am over 50, and I can't think of a time in my life when it would have
appealed to me. I don't remember Hostess Twinkies ever begin anything but
    horrible.

IMO, it should all be left alone and as is. That way we can savor the
artery clogging junk food and not worry about the extra fat from frying 😉

    Michael

Was reading the ingredients list for Twinkies today. Definitely
surprised that they *can* contain beef fat. Knew there was a reason I
didn't want to eat them LOL!

I hear ya! But then, I don't think I've had a Twinkie since the 1970's.

Sorry, Roger. It took all the guts I could muster to even read this
thread. Deep-fried Mars bars are also way up there - same batter,
BTW. You're on you're own friend - I'm not trying that [censored] for all
the money in the world <G>.

I believe you, but I'll try to remember to check the next time
I go to the store -- I haven't eaten a Twinkie in 30 years, and
DS doesn't care for sweet snacks much...

Was going to buy one in honour of the 75th anniversary. Changed my mind
    after that :P
