The charity exemption lets a few dodgy non-profits get thro' particularly things like "police benefit associations" and the like that may give 5% of the take to the actual charity in a good year. Everyone I know who wants to talk to me lets me know who they are.

Ooh, I had one of those bogus "policeman's charity fund associations" call me up. When I told the solicitor I wasn't interested in contributing he basically threatened me... "Well, ma'am, you'd better hope you never need to call a cop for help because we keep lists". I laughed at him and hung up

I simply ask how "Bob" is doing because I haven't seen him for awhile. They ask who "Bob" is and I say he is the police chief and thought you were soliciting on their behalf. Then silence with a deer in headlights expression if you could see it and then usually something like sorry and then they hang up.

I called my local police after one of those calls to make sure it wasn't them looking for money. Absolutely not, we do not solicit via phone calls. Thank you.
As James said, many if not all of those phone charity solicitors only donate pennies on the dollar to the actual charity. How this is perfectly legal I don't understand, but it is.
