Can anyone recommend a decent road bike to a beginner or perhaps a hybrid that could be used for someone interested in taking up Cyclocross? I have not previously been much into cycling as long distance rides left me with an aching back but I think that was more of a consequence of poor fit than cycling itself. I am about 6'4" and 165-170lbs. I am an avid runner and cardio-freak but years of pounding the pavement, treadmills and pick-up basketball are starting to take a toll on my right knee even though I'm only 25. Also recommendations with a budget in mind would be well appreciated. I'm in grad school and living on a low-income!
I'm no expert, but I went through the process this weekend. I had a specific bike in mind from Net research, but once I went to a few bike shops and actually rode a bunch of them, I was able to more readily assess which was right for me. People will be brand loyal, but a proper fit, and what you can afford are very important.
Go to a few shops, test ride a properly sized bike and go from there is all I can say. I bought something I wasn't even considering. Will you be into it long term or just testing the waters?

I have been living this summer temporarily in New Orleans, a place virtually nothing in the way of outdoor recreation and gyms so when I get back home I would definately like to take up something that will make up for lost time spent reading paperback rubbish in a hotel room and wasting money at bars!
I'm a beginner too. I went to every LBS in the area and rode lots of bikes. I finally bought a Raleigh Cadent 1.0 for $589. Price couldn't be beat, and I think its a great bike.
I was planning on buying used as everything seemed out of my price range - but buying new has some nice benefits - my LBS gives me lifetime adjustments.
