Recovery Ride

I understand the concept of a recovery ride but......

How should your recovery ride compare to the rest of your cycling? Should it be done only after extremely long rides, and what pace and distance should it be compared to the rest of your rides...

For reference I ride 4 days a week... Sat and Sun I ride at least 20 miles a day and Tues and Thurs I ride at least 10 miles a day...

It's not the distance, it's the pace. I make my recovery rides once a week, after some days of hard interval or climbing training and before a race or long ride, and I try to keep the pace between 60 and 70 % of MHR.
