I am thinking of moving to a SS and was thinking of the Monocog. The rear hub spacing scares me but
I don't know much about BMX hubs, etc. I don't build my own wheels so I would have to have wheels
built special if I ever needed some. I see that right now Jenson sells wheelsets for the Monocog
but what about 2 - 3 years from now. Would it be a major inconvenience to have wheels built with a
BMX hub? In addition, I have seen some complaints of the seatpost slipping but that they
acknowledged the wrong size post shipping on some bikes. I gave my old bike that I was going to
build into a SS to my friend's son a few years ago. I think it would have cost just as much to
convert (1993 Bridgestone) as to buy one of these anyway.

Would you buy one? They look fun. I think I will go to my local Redline dealer and check them out
for curiousity sake.

I have a 2003 Monocog, and was made aware of the seat post slip too, but to this day hasn't budged
under my hefty 175 pounds.

You'll really enjoy the bike. In fact, it's hard to even go back to a hardtail after riding it, just
because it handles so precise and accelerates so quick.Even with only 80mm of travel on my hardtail,
the front suspended hardtail feels sloppy after riding the Monoog. It's a great feeling riding with
someone else who has a mulit geared bike, especially when climbing, when you go past them so
effortlessly.

No. Poor tolerances and non-mountain bike specific rear hub spacing is plenty of reason to steer
clear. You get what you pay for. The Bridgestone would probably make a much better ride.

Not really, other than that you will be limited to 36H (or 48...) hubs and of course a nutted axle
instead of a Q.R.

All SS's should have nutted axles, not QR's on the rear. QR's don't have enough power to hold the
tension that is necessary on the chain especially when using "track" dropouts, they slip too easily
when torqued.

I probably wouldn't buy one -- I'd probably put a new wheel on the Bridgestone. I don't know how
much the Redline's going for, but I can't imagine it wouldn't be considerably cheaper. Plus, I'm
6'2, and I have yet to see a Monocog that doesn't look way too small. With that said, a slipping
seatpost is easily fixed with a beercan shim. Otherwise, I couldn't find stuff on the site regarding
rear dropout spacing. Is the spacing wider than a BMX hub? Or are you just nervous about using a BMX
hub? Any decent wheelbuilder can build you just about any wheel you'd like, and I'm sure the flanges
are well-wider than flanges on any geared MTB, so wheel strength shouldn't be an issue. And as far
as the width between dropouts versus hub width goes, slight differences shouldn't matter a whole lot
on a steel frame. I've got an lightweight (for the time) 80's Nishiki road racing frame with a fixie
hub in back that's 5mm narrower than the dropouts. I should shim it, but don't. It's got a gazillion
potholed miles on it, and hasn't cracked yet (knock on wood). /s /s

I don't know what I will do.... I really don't want to get stuck with a misfit bike that I have to
search for a wheel. I would like to get something with normal MTB spacing. I wish I still had my old
bike. Maybe I can pick up a frame cheap and put a wheel, singlespeed crank/bottom bracket, and
singulator.

That would probably be the best and be in the spirit of singlespeeding. Maybe convert my hardtail
and be done with it....

You should never have too much trouble finding a wheel, but you may be limited to 36 spokes.

Dude get a Bianchie DSS single speed .They are much cooler than a Redline .The redline I looked at
was Heavy as hell for no gears and derailers.I will get One some day .I like the DSS Big tire's and
disk brakes for a good price.
