Remove chain

Get a 2x4. Drill a 5/8" hole. Put link over hole. Use a small hole
punch and hit with hammer.

To put it back in, repeat step above or use a vice grip.

Worked for me before I bought a tool. I still would recommend you buy
the tool. They are not expensive. You could even get a cheap bike
multi-tool from wal-mart for $8 that has one built in.

Buy one... but be aware that some (most nowadays?) chains are not meant to be
reassembled with a chain tool - i.e. they use quick links instead. Last year, I
did a moderately-effective job of messing up a knee by violating that rule.
