All of my shorts have a small pocket just inside the front waistband.
Plenty of room for the one key or keycard or keyfob that I need. I'm
surprised that all running shorts aren't made this way as I've never
looked for this feature, it was always just there.

I either attach the key to the waistline of my pants with a safety
pin, or I put it in the pocket of my safety vest if the weather or
time of day dictates that I need to be seen by traffic... Some people
also have those [censored] pack type waist things that don't hold very much
but can accomodate keys.

The chances of you ever needing to bring more than 1 key with you on a
run are slim. You either need to bring your vehicle key if you've
driven to your running spot, or your house key if you left your
hosue...

Haha. If only. I need to carry 3 house keys at a minimum - one for the
outer building door, and two for the flat door. Some times I'll also
have a bike lock key, but then I'd usually have a bag anyway. I buy
shorts with a zip pocket in the back (accessed from the outside). With
multiple keys there can be a jangling noise each step, so I use an
elastic band to keep them together. I wouldn't say that I notice the
presence of keys in the pocket.

Same here. Even the super lightweight shorts that have no side nor
rear pockets, usually have an inside waist band pocket. I take just
the ignition key and carry it there. Don't even know it is there.

LOL! Sorry, I didn't even consider different situations than my
own! Even so, 3 keys without a decorative key chain do not take up
much space!!

Another place is a sock or a jacket pocket.
Along with a key, I carry last years medical insurance card
as an ID, and on occasion cash (in unfamilar cities).
Ambulance drivers may take you to the publc assistance ER
if thnik you dont have insurance.

Aha! Thanks for the idea. I've got two pair of shorts with outer
pockets and no inner, and the keys jangle in them if left to their own
devices. A rubber band is a more elegant solution than wrapping in
tissue and then enclosing in a baggie, which I'd been doing.

Are these elaborate security measures more necessary for large cities?
90 miles north of NYC we can just about leave the keys in our car and
run. Hell, pick any old race and I'll bet I could find the keys to half
the cars but there has not be one case of car theft in the 21 years I've
been running. Things are less complicated here in Lake Wobegon, where
all the women are strong, all the men are good-looking, and all the
children are above average.

Most running shorts have a special key pocket. Most good running pants have
zip pockets.

It's the building, not the city per se.

You see, I don't live in a single-unit house. It's a five story
building with nine residential units and a store. So there's a front
door (key 1), an inner door another six feet down the hallway (key 2),
and finally my apartment door (key 3).

Things also seem less complicated in Portland. Slower pace... a much,
much slower pace. Had I stayed any longer I'm pretty sure they woulda
kicked me out of town for failing to smoke pot. Seems like you need a
doctor's written permission to skip the otherwise mandatory mj program
in that city.
