This seems like a good place to butt in and remember that supreme climber,
Marco Pantani. Watching him effortlessly(?) glide up some of those
leg-buckling TdF mountain stages was jaw-dropping. Inspiring stuff.

Unfortunately Marco's career ended in very seedy and lonely circumstances,
indelibly tarnished by drugs. But for me, your human failings didn't negate
your achievments and the pleasure you brought to so many armchair mountain
climber dreamers like me!

May you rest in peace Marco.

Yes, he came up with some good rides and still holds the
record for fastest ascent up L'Alp d'Huez I think (which
was achieved at the end of a 200km plus stage). Armstrong
has the second fastest which was for a time trial 2 or 3 years
back.

I can remember Pantani the year that Ullrich won. They were
together up some climb and Ullrich started to ride away from
Pantani. Pantani's team car came alongside and he was told
to get after him. His response included some wild Italian
gesticulations which needed no audio to understand! Ullrich
won that day I think.

Great stuff.

Got mine!.....the only good thing about being stuck at Sydney airport for 4 hours because Qantas can't seem to manage to fly in the fog.... rant, rant....was that it forced me to peruse the newsagents offerings....voila...Rides' TDF guide........

Bike safely packed in the box. French phrase book unopened! Riding routes and viewing points investigated. Copy of the Ride Guide to read on the plane. Isn't life great?

wanted a cappuccino - it was 8 bucks! That's worse than
Subiaco. I'll bring my own croissant (which, you may
not know, was originally an Austrian pastry).

I've been in alt.religion.kibology so long, where the standard meme is
Austrian<->Australian, that I'm now terribly confused. I thought

Last time I was at the Champs, I ordered capps for me and my wife, and
hot chocs for the kiddies. The French dude said, "Only drinks?? Go next
door, lunch crowd will be in soon, and I don't want you taking up
tables just for drinks...".

I used my limited French to explain to him my extreme dismay at his
attitude (*laughs*), and headed next door...

was surprised to see the Champs is on a hill! I dont think the usual route actually goes up it toward the ArcDeTriomphe but turns left and into the tunnel first(?)
