Hundreds of gritters were out last night as the mercury fell below zero in

No, no, we can all laugh at the foolish cagers whose mobile death
greenhouses grind to a standstill at the first sign of inclement

below zero; that is cold! the Daily Mail always prints its summer "phew
wot a scorcher" temperatures in Fahrenheit so presumably they are using
    the same scale here ;-)

Yes, but then they'll probably laugh at me as I go [censored] over [censored] on an
    icy patch.

There's a *lot* of field runoff round here at the moment - a few days
near or below freezing and you get fascinating and challenging mounds of
highly polished ice all across the road. Great 🙁

Could be interesting for Nathan when he cycles up to college tomorrow... Mind
you, according to the BBC weather web site, we are supposed to have a minimum
of 9C tonight. But the weather site has been known to get it wrong ;-)

You know, despite living in the relatively mild southern climes I am almost
tempted to get a pair of those. There are always a few days each winter
when getting about on some roads on a bike is decidely dodgy - mainly
between my house and the main road! They don't grit the little residential
side roads and even a heavy frost can make things decidely skittish. But
the cost is a bit off-putting.

The last pair I bought were less than a pound each from a jumble sale. They
were the older versions with steel rather than tungsten carbide studs. I
have used them in Scotland, but had them on the bike for months at a time in
Oslo. Great gear for the conditions. I towd the trailer full of shopping up
a 1 in 10 hill covered in sheet (2" thick) ice with them.

Does exactly what it says on the tin and at 25 quid each, worth every penny.

It all seems reasonably warm to me, considering the time of year.

You should watch a bit of Channel 5's American Football. The name

The last time I watched American football, there was someone called "The
Fridge" playing and it shows that real men play rugger. Non of this

Most professional rugby union players now wear protective safety
    equipment on the upper body.
