Rim Choice?

What do you use the bike for? The only racing I do is TTs, so I'd have
the deep CXP33s. Silver, to minimise the likelihood of cracking [1],
and I'd use DT Revolution spokes if someone else was building it
(they're light, but have a reputation for being tricky to build with
because they twist).

[1] silver anodising is usually a superficial layer, unlike the
grey/brown "hard anodising". Looks better as the brake tracks wear, too.

Club ride, solo 2-4 hour rides.
Anyone have any opinions of Velocity rims?

Stiff & strong work in the oposite direction as light.
If durability isn't an issue, and weight is, you will get the least spokes and the skinniest spokes you can buy; along with the lighest rims you can find.
But wait, you want stiff and strong. Well forget the least number of spokes and the skinniest... and the lightest rims because they all detract from stiffness and strength.
At 190 pounds, you may be pushing your objectives past reality in attempting to attain less than 1,745 g for a set of wheels.

A suitable light custom wheel set using CK hubs will bring you in around 1,660 g when including the weight of strong and stiff QR skewers, which is about 80 total grams less than a DURA ACE 7700 set up with Revolution spokes front and left rear... and 28 spokes front/32 spokes rear. I used Velocity Aerohead rims in my calculations because they would be suitably stiff and strong for a rider of your weight. Velocity Fusion rim? Midweight, mid-depth section looks cool, comes
in many blingy colors. If they're too heavy, check out the Aerohead,
same color choice. Unfortunately I don't think you can get Rasta-ano
rims without resorting to a custom paint job. (All that heavy paint!)

Sapim CX-Ray spokes. The blingiest you can get, and also the
strongest--but very light weight! Again no red, green or gold, but
you'll live.

great rims. I have a arrowhead in front and the deep v in back. so far they have
been perfect and I am 235.

Great rims. use Fusion or Aerohead(Off center drilled in the rear), 32 spokes,
Revolutions in the front, brass nipps(no eyelets), 14/15 rear...laced three
cross all aopund and 'built well'.

Any comments on why one might prefer Fusion over Aerohead/Aerohead OC
or vice versa? The Fusions are a little more aero and I assume a
little stronger, but slightly heavier. I suspect that for most riders
those differences are insignificant, so I was wondering if you have
any other relevant observations about them.

I'm a great fan of Velocity rims. At your weight, I'd suggest
Velocity Fusion for the front, Deep V rear. 28 Revolution spokes
front, 2-cross, 16 14/15 gauge rear right, 16 Revolutions rear left,
both 3-cross. If money no object, go with Sapim CX-ray spokes.
Should be strong, reliable, lighter and more aero than your Race
Lites. For some suggestions for a closer fit to your exact needs, why

While one wheel might have more spokes, could it overcome
this aerodynamic penalty with a deeper rim tapering further
inward toward the hub?

That is, the rim drag might be reduced enough to offset a
few extra spokes, all of which are also shortened and their
drag reduced by the deeper rim.

After all, the best drag shape for a wheel (I think) is a
full disk. which is either an infinite number of spokes or
the ultimate in a deep rim.

This is just a possibility. I don't know of any site that
tests or compares wheels for drag--do you have any leads?
