I got a new wheel last week, and the rim tape I used was a Schwalbe plastic
tape. Only cost a quid, couldn't tell you anything about long term
performance though. :-)

While I appreciate the importance of good tape, I must confess that
rims that I have taped tend to be taped with electrical tape. I've
not had a spoke puncture yet!

If you really don't use it for anything else, one roll will last you
through more wheels than you could possibly hope to build.

Self-amalging tape would be better than regular PVC tape. Problem is
cost would be on a par with proper rim tape.

Maybe not for recessed spoke holes + high pressure tyres.

Velox rools ok! It is the only rim tape to use 🙂

I thoroughly recommend Velox.

I confess I used two layers of ordinary Sellotape as an emergency
stop-gap when my horrid OE rim tape failed[1], to get me to LBS so I
could buy Velox. It worked.

[1] Causing a 2am puncture, followed by another while I was away at work
the following day.

I bought some rim tape the other day after your recommendations. I was just
wondering if theres any particular way of fitting it, or is it just a case
of whip the old stuff off and stick the new stuff on?

Make sure the hole lines up with the hole. If the tape is too long,
trim it. It should overlap by about an inch but not block the hole.

Apart from that, make sure the spoke heads are covered.

That's it. Easy as fitting rim tape.
